The humble video game spin-off is becoming rarer and rarer these days. Probably because developers and publishers have learned from past mistakes. Or they don't wish to be humiliated in YouTube videos such as these. But that's what we're going to do anyway because, well, these games really suck. Here are our top five dumbest video game spin-offs.
5. Shadow the Hedgehog - SEGA Studio USA
On paper, Shadow the Hedgehog sounds like a pretty good game. Badass character, new gameplay elements and a branching storyline sound like a decent enough formula. But then someone thought it would be cool to add things such as guns and a darker story tone to the mix, and so was born another crappy Sonic spin-off. We'll take Free Riders over this one any day.
4. Bomberman: Act Zero - Hudson Soft
When you hear the word 'Bomberman', colourful robots frolicking around a blocky maze come to mind, right? Well, that's certainly not how Hudson Soft pictured it with Bomberman Act Zero. For some reason, they decided to throw a Deus Ex-like steampunk spin on things, and out came this muddled piece of crap. Cyborgs, we can live with, but a Bomberman game lacking all things Bomberman? We'll wait for the next act, thanks.
3. Street Fighter: The Movie - Capcom
This is Street Fighter: The Movie. A video game spin-off based on a movie tie-in of a video game series. Now, that's a funny combination! But so is the flu and gangrene, and that sucks as well. Street Fighter was doing just fine on its own, so why the hell would they try and turn it into a tacky Mortal Kombat rip off?! At least it gives Shaq Fu something to rub shoulders with.
2. Resident Evil Survivor - Capcom
We can't help but feel Resident Evil Survivor would have worked well in the arcades as an on-rails shooter. But as a static, lifeless FPS on the PlayStation with infinite ammo and a story written by a toddler, it's a total dud. The only survival horror you'll experience in this game is whether you can survive how horrible the wretched thing is!
1. Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon - Viridis
Asking a group of Zelda fans in 1993 for the worst game in the series, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is likely what you would hear. So whatever possessed Viridis to take the foundations of that game and FUBAR them to oblivion, we have no idea. This game is as backwards as they come. Just like the Philips CD-i itself, The Wand of Gamelon is a travesty to gaming and the Zelda series as a whole.
