Ten ZX Spectrum games that you have to play

12:58
As I’ve happily played through the Your Sinclair Top 100 over the past three months I’ve also had the chance to trawl through my wide variety of numerous other games too. Granted not all these games been great, as seen in the Top 5 Worst Games on the ZX Spectrum (see the link below), however there have been some which need playing and I’ve gathered them together. These games aren’t just arcade conversions from major labels, there’s original classics too scattered in amongst these shiny big names. However keep in mind this isn’t a Top 10 pop-pickers, albeit this list is counting up there is no high status given to any game; No.#4 isn’t better than No.#7 and vice versa, all of these games are classics and deserve equal respect. There’s obviously going to be something missing from this list that is dear to a classic gamer out there, so share below what you think should be in the “Must Play” list of ZX Spectrum games. Follow the Your Sinclair Top 100 Countdown at FlickeringMyth.com here - http://www.flickeringmyth.com/?s=your+sinclair My Top 5 Worst ZX Spectrum Games can be found here at FlickeringMyth.com - http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2016/06/the-top-5-worst-zx-spectrum-games-ever/

Manic Miner on the 16K ZX81 (Hi Res)

Ales Martinik - "Yes, it was me, who during the holiday in 1984 "down-ported" and optimized Manic Minder to fit into 16KB ZX81. Original game on Spectrum is 48KB and is written very clear (author was 14), so the data storage could be optimized. Worst problem was the pseudo-graphics for ZX81, because from the 256 combination of 8 pixels were available only something about 120, so the proper combination must be choosen to make "persons", monsters and bushes look realistic." Your Sinclairs 100 Greatest Games - 20 Spy vs Spy #ZXSpectrum

04:32
Spy vs Spy was published by Beyond Software in 1985 Created by Tag, The Kid It was back in 1985 that Spy vs Spy arrived from Beyond Software, the same publishing house behind the fantastic The Lords of Midnight (See that review below), and this violent cartoon strategy game was created by Tag and the Kid. There were two ways to play the game – either with one player vs CPU or Simuplay (not a cybersex game) being the two player mode, which is in truth the way this game should be played. You find yourself as one of the infamous spies locked within a building close to an airfield, and you need to quickly get out to the plane on the runway, leaving before your nemesis does. It, however, is never that simple, as hidden throughout the building are four objects and a briefcase, and you’ll need these before you can get to the exit; this is what the opposing spy is looking for too. To slow down your professional enemy you have a series of traps you can place within within the numerous rooms. These include a large, tightly wound spring, a bucket of electrified water, a gun and string, a time-bomb with a 15 second fuse and this is where the fun really comes into the game. You become more engrossed in placing traps into pieces of furniture than you do in finding four objects and a briefcase, as the sadistic streak emerges from deep inside of you. Spy vs Spy was a firm favourite of mine on its release due to the total anarchic fun it brought to playing a game with a friend. Still now the game is enjoyable and it captures the look of the MAD comic strip well (it’d be difficult not to really as the strip is drawn in black & white). Spy vs Spy is a game that really comes into it’s own when played with two players, alone it’s good but nowhere near as fantastic when you have a friend cursing you, one foot away from you ear. If you fancy unleashing fiendish, painful, retro hell upon a friend, but don’t want to spend twenty years eating porridge at her Majesty’s pleasure then I’d wholeheartedly recommend Spy vs Spy. The Lords of Midnught review - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6r3gj4r6to Original Flickering Myth review - http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2016/08/the-top-100-your-sinclair-zx-spectrum-games-20-spy-vs-spy/ Spy vs Spy can be found on the World of Spectrum here - http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0004786

Your Sinclairs 100 Greatest Games - 9 Boulder Dash #ZXSpectrum

05:06
Boulder Dash was published by Front Runner in 1984 Created by Dalali Software Ltd, Peter Liepa, Chris Gray This world renowned game arrived officially on the ZX Spectrum back in 1984, a tie-in license from First Star Software Inc. that was programmed by Dalali Software Ltd., who in this case was Peter Liepa and Chris Gray. First Star Software Inc. were previously involved in another Your Sinclair Top 100 game, Spy vs Spy [review below] which sits at No.#20 in the chart. The task in Boulder Dash is an extremely simple one, mine the diamonds and make your way to the exit; however physics as ever always steps in to spoil everyone’s fun. Littered throughout this mine are delicately balanced, hulking great big boulders that have sat for eons tucked in between dirt. That was until you decided one day to make a grab for the sparkly diamonds and then all the boulders came tumbling down towards you; it’s here you need to rapidly get out of the way before you become a mere smear up the floor of history. Later you discover that the boulders play part of an important puzzle to advance deeper into the mine, or they can be used to either stop the advancing amoebas, transform butterflies into diamonds, or to outwit a difficult firefly and it’s diamond stash. Everybody knows Boulder Dash, it is like the Mr. Spock of the gaming world, you don’t even have had to have played it to know what you’re supposed to do. Newcomers to the game get the gist of it within a matter of seconds and they’ll get an instant sense of achievement as they pass the first level in minutes. Granted the graphics now are wholeheartedly basic in appearance, but that doesn’t destroy any of the gameplay. There is one issue with the ZX Spectrum release which is a pest and that is the scrolling, it’s a pain in the backside, for you have to wait for it to for the mine catch up with your miner if you run off the screen. Boulder Dash is a game that will live forever because at its core it is timeless, the graphics may change with each generation but as long as they don’t bugger around with the cogs and springs everything will run fine. Your Sinclairs 100 Greatest Games - 38 Gauntlet #ZXSpectrum

07:02
Gauntlet was published by U.S. Gold in 1987 Created by Gremlin Graphics Software Ltd (Tony R. Porter, Kevin Bulmer, Bill Allen, Ben Daglish) Music composed by Ben Daglish Gauntlet began life as a four-player Atari arcade game back in 1985; it was quickly ported over to the ZX Spectrum – for U.S. Gold – by Gremlin Graphics – to be exact it was Tony R. Porter, Kevin Bulmer and Bill Allen, and Ben Daglish on the music. There were four different characters to pick from each with their own weapon of choice and each bringing both a strength and a weakness to the game. It was your job to crawl through the many dungeons slaying numerous varied beasts, gathering treasures and of course attempting to survive. Here is a game that is truly brilliant on the ZX Spectrum! Of all the games I’ve played whilst running through this Top 100 I can honestly say that seeing this placed such a huge smile upon my face, as the wave of nostalgia it brought back washed over me when it loaded. Everything still looks perfect – the colours are clear, the enemy mobs spawn thick and fast, the gameplay is there in spades and you can even play two players at once! The Gremlin Graphics team really delivered something magnificent onto the doorstep of U.S. Gold. Gauntlet is amazing! Getting the opportunity to run around the walled dungeons packed with numerous evil spitting whatnots is something all gamers should try at least once. Stop playing you expensive, shiny games and load up Gauntlet now! Flickering Myth - http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2016/07/the-top-100-your-sinclair-zx-spectrum-games-38-gauntlet/ Gauntlet can be found on the World of Spectrum here - http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0001989

Your Sinclairs 100 Greatest Games - 15 The Lords of Midnight #ZXSpectrum

05:08
The Lords of Midnight was published by Beyond Software in 1984 Created by Mike Singleton Arriving on the ZX Spectrum back in 1984, programmed by the late Mike Singleton, The Lords of Midnight was an instant success winning Crash Magazine’s best adventure game in the 1984 Crash reader awards. It wasn’t a real surprise as this deeply engrossing, extremely well plotted adventure game also boasted around 32,000 pieces of artwork within the game too! Your quest is to destroy Doomdark, the evil Witchking, who has sealed the land of Midnight into perpetual winter. This can be achieved in three ways and it’s down to you to choose your path. Starting with four characters – Luxor the Moonprince, Rorthron the Wise, Corleth the Fey, and Morkin, you have the chance to bring together twenty-eight residents of this land into your group. You can either play the game as a straight adventure where you destroy the source of Doomdarks power, the Ice Crown; or you can play the The Lords of Midnight as an wargrame, bringing together the numerous Lords scattered across the lands – along with their armies – until eventually your force is strong enough to defeat Doomdark; finally the third option which is a combination of them both. The Lords of Midnight still to this day on the ZX Spectrum is a hugely impressive game, though newcomers to this adventure may be a bit lost without the use of the accompanying maps. That and without first reading a bit of the backstory, but with this information – which can be found over at the World of Spectrum – you will have a few pieces to help you appreciate this true classic. Sadly Mike Singleton passed away back in 2012, however Chris Wild who delivered The Lords of Midnight onto the PC and numerous other platforms including iOS and Android [See below for the TLoM homepage], is currently in the process of delivering the long awaited book which Mike had wanted to see on the shelves; according to Wikipedia we should be seeing it on the 21st December 2017. The Lords of Midnight is a game that needs to be played by everyone that has ever owned a computer, just remember forewarned is forearmed. Your Sinclairs 100 Greatest Games - 2 Rebelstar #ZXSpectrum

04:46
Rebelstar was published by Firebird in 1986 Created by Julian Gollop, Simon Clarke Rebelstar first appeared on the ZX Spectrum back in 1986 programmed by Julian Gollop, and it was the highly praised sequel to Rebelstar Raiders – also on the Spectrum – from 1984. This turn-based strategy game sees the Raiders pitted against the Operatives. Your job as the Raiders is to break into the occupied Moonbase Delta and destroy ISAAC (the main core), or if you want to go on a more blunt mission destroy all the Operatives instead. With numerous weapons to collect, bodies of fallen comrades to scavenge, morale to impede your aim and coffee tokens to find, Rebelstar isn’t just a five minute affair. Not only that but you can make it more interesting in two player mode. Here’s a game that as a child I lost countless hours too, thanks mainly to Your Sinclair placing it on a free cover tape not once but twice. It is so extremely engrossing that time streams past you outside the Rebelstar world and you barely notice your bones losing density. Still to this day, when you get your head around the controls, you can lose yourself so easily within this strategy game. Granted the graphics don’t have a highly detailed 3D isometric slant to them, however they serve their purpose well and you can clearly see what they are meant to be. You could argue that Rebelstar 2 or Laser Squad should be in this spot, but there would be no point – if we’re honest – as all are worthy of be acknowledged as fantastic games. To bring it back to the opening statement, as you look at X-Com 2 thinking ‘This game is the bee’s knees!’, take a moment to remember it’s humble genesis on the ZX Spectrum. If you’d like to have a go of Rebelstar or Rebelstar 2 it’s available via a Flash website here. - http://rebel.zame-dev.org/ Original Flickering Myth review - http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2016/08/the-top-100-your-sinclair-zx-spectrum-games-2-rebelstar/ Rebelstar can be found on the World of Spectrum here - http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0004058

Worst ZX Spectrum Games Ever! - Renegade 3

04:10
Renegade 3 was published by Imagine in 1989 Created by Andrew P. Deakin, Ivan Horn, Jonathan Dunn Music composed by Jonathan Dunn After the huge fan and critical success of Renegade and Target: Renegade how could this go wrong? Well first you strip out everything that was brilliant about the first two games, then you give the “Renegade” an extremely limited and dull amount of poorly executed set of fighting moves and then finally you make every level appear to be the same expect you redress the enemies. Renegade III has truly no charm, no fun and no ball-crunching, high-kicking, weapon-swinging brilliance that we had been treated to in the first two parts of the saga. It was like Ocean & Imagine purposely set out to upset us. Your Sinclairs 100 Greatest Games - 32 Jet Set Willy #ZXSpectrum

04:27
Jet Set Willy was published by Software Projects Ltd in 1984 Created by Matthew Smith Jet Set Willy, created in 1984, was the sequel to the other excellent game Manic Miner, both from the brain of Matthew Smith. Here Miner Willy has been spending the wealth he’s acquired since digging his way out of his last game, however his copious amount of partying and drunken debauchery hasn’t gone over to well. Willy is now nursing a rather tender head and wishes to return to his bed, however Maria – his housekeeper – is not too pleased with the mess and won’t let him anywhere near his fluffy pillows until the entire house – plus surrounding grounds – is cleared up of littered glasses and bottles. This is where you come in. Matthew Smith created quite frankly a brilliant game to sing the praises of the ZX Spectrum; it’s colourful, tricky, it has bizarre enemies, and it screams, “Imagination!”. Gone are the basic black & white days of the ZX81, gone are the dull clunky, early ZX Spectrum sprites and here comes platforms, animations, levels that link into each other and a rather annoying ditty that brings back bucket loads of nostalgia when you hear it. Matthew Smith sold the ZX Spectrum to the UK in my humble opinion. This all being said I am quite frankly rubbish at Jet Set Willy and always have been. I can barely get ten objects within the game – it’s embarrassing watching me play this classic! If you wanted to get a gamer – from the era – to sell Jet Set Willy to today’s crowd you must never ask me, as I bumble along with glee and stumble on the most simplest of traps; yet I love it to my core. Jet Set Willy is a true ZX Spectrum classic and placing it a No.#32 is technically a crime, as it should be far higher than this. Original review at Flickering Myth - http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2016/07/the-top-100-your-sinclair-zx-spectrum-games-32-jet-set-willy/ Jet Set Willy can be found on the World of Spectrum here - http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0002589

Your Sinclairs 100 Greatest Games - 83 Football Manager #zxspectrum

06:02
I'm making my way through the 100 greatest games as listed in Your Sinclair October 1991. This review looks at Football Manager from 1982, published by Alternative Games Ltd and developed by Kevin Toms. It takes a steely nerve to put a curly-haired, bearded chap smiling on the cover of something and then expect it to sell well. In truth this only really happens once a decade it being Bob Ross’ (Deceased) turn the decade before. However when Kevin Toms appeared, smiling on the cover of his Football Manager – No. #83 in the Your Sinclair Top 100 – nobody expected the gaming world to shake as much as it did. Football Manager was the first game of its kind; originally appearing on the TRS-80 and the ZX-81 it quickly became ported to the ZX Spectrum released via Addictive in 1982. Though programmed in BASIC, this football management strategy game saw you juggling players in your classic 1980’s team. Football Manager was nominated for a Golden Joystick award and hailed as a classic from numerous magazines and fans alike. Though myself I was never a football fan and I never owned Football Manager nor ever wanted it either. The idea of the pigs bladder – real or virtual – even rolling towards my feet makes me wants to stick a fork in it and end it all! Kevin Toms last year attempted to launch a new Football Manager on the mobile platforms via Kickstarter, but unfortunately didn’t reach the target. However he’s continued to build the game and you can follow his progress on his Facebook page. You can follow the developments on Kevin Toms latest Football Management game over on his Facebook page here - https://www.facebook.com/KevinTomsGames/?fref=ts Original Flickering Myth review - http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2016/06/the-top-100-your-sinclair-zx-spectrum-games-83-football-manager/ You can find the game here at World of Spectrum - http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0001823
