Map of Science (and everything else)

09:12
The Map of Science explores what science really is. Check out this video's sponsor https://brilliant.org/dos In this video I investigate what makes a science a science, and how the scientific method is used in different subjects. I lay out all of the areas of human endeavor and show how they relate to each other from philosophy, through the sciences, to the social sciences, the arts and back to philosophy which I have drawn as a big donut. The main theme is that the scientific method is harder and harder to apply to subjects as they deal with more and more complex systems. When I said I did in depth maps of ‘all’ of these subjects, I meant just the main ones, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and computer science. You can get the poster here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman I have also made versions available for educational use which you can find here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/95869671@N08/ If you want to check out my Professor Astro Cat books go here: http://profastrocat.com The trippy ending uses footage from this amazing video: https://youtu.be/-Z4jx5VMw8M And is inspired by this other amazing video: https://youtu.be/uwmeH6Rnj2E Thanks so much to my supporters on Patreon. Klutz LEGO Chain Reactions Craft Kit To some, LEGO is one of the greatest toy brands out there. But as you know, it’s not just for making houses, and cars, and giant pirate ships anymore!! For the scientific mind, the Klutz LEGO Chain Reactions Craft Kit is here to help you learn the beauty of chain reactions, physics, and more. 12. Drones While it may be a stretch to refer to a drone as a "toy", it's definitely something kids, teens, and adults can "play" with in order to get their fun and science on. You might be wondering, "How are drones scientific?" True, on some levels, it's not, it's not used as an experiment, or a test object, but rather, it can be used to observe other fields of science, and help in scientific endeavors. 11. Crystal Growing Kit Despite what some kids think, rocks are an important part of our world, and some of them have hidden secrets inside of them, which is why the Crystal Growing Kits that are out there are perfect toys for young scientists. 10. Bug Off Do you like bugs? Or do you have a child that likes bugs? Maybe you want to observe them up close but are afraid they’ll bite you or something! But it’s more than likely you’ll hurt them before they hurt you!! In any case, you'll love the Bug Off! This is a device that looks like a gun, but it is actually a bug retrieval and observation system. 9. K'NEX DNA Set DNA is the very building blocks of our existence!! It's our DNA that defines how we look, and sometimes how we act, and if you or your child wants to learn more about DNA, then the K'NEX team has something for you!! 8. Newton's Cradle One of the most iconic science toys in the world has to be the Newton's Cradle. This device is a way to demonstrate the law of conservation of momentum and energy. While also showing off Newton's Third Law, "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction". Or in this case, lifting and dropping one sphere on one side of the cradle will cause the sphere at the end to lift and then drop as well. 7. Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 Electronics Discovery Kit You might think that electronics are well beyond the scope of kids and young teens, but the Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 Electronics Discovery Kit makes that statement false in a very fun way. 6. Hi-Speed Camera For those who have money, and really want to dive deep into how certain things work, you might be interested in a Hi-Speed camera, such as the Phantom v2511. What does a high-speed camera do? Well, think about how a TV or movie works. Every second on screen is actually a set of frames that are played in such a way that you don't notice their movement. 5. The Magic School Bus Chemistry Set The Magic School Bus is by and large one of the most popular and scientific cartoons ever made, they even made a "revival series" on Netflix!!! I loved this show as a kid, and I learned a lot!!! If you're looking for a scientific toy based off the hit series, there's a chemistry set available for you to get! Mannnn, I really missed out as a kid!!! 4. 3-in-1 Space Explorer Telescope Telescopes on their own are a fun scientific toy, but the 3-in-1 Space Explorer Telescope is a bit more fun depending on how you see things. Through this very special telescope, budding astronomers will get to look at actual pictures taken by NASA of planets like Saturn, Jupiter, and more. 3. Gravity Maze As a wise man once said, "Gravity man, it's not just a nice idea, it's the law!" and if you want a toy that'll make you think about the laws of gravity, then you'll definitely want the Gravity Maze toy. 2. Educational Insights Microscope Set A microscope may seem like an adults tool, but it can also be a viable toy for young children depending on the model. The full name of this microscope is the Educational Insights GeoSafari Micropro 48-Piece Microscope Set!!. It’s perfect for children and young teens (and who are we kidding? The rest of us!) who want to get a glimpse at what the world is like on a microscopic level. 1. Stomp Rocket Jr. Glow The Stomp Rocket Jr. Glow is by far one of the coolest scientific toys out there today, as it's literally a rocket that kids can launch into the air by stomping on the launch "button". How is that not fun?? Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

The Chemistry of Fear - Bytesize Science

04:29
With Halloween just a few days away, millions are flocking to horror films and haunted houses for their annual dose of terror. Our latest video uncovers the chemistry behind the spine-tingling sense of fear. "Fear is the expectation or the anticipation of possible harm... We know that the body is highly sensitive to the possibility of threat, so there are multiple pathways that bring that fear information into the brain," explains Abigail Marsh, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Georgetown University. Marsh's research focuses on the neuroscience of fear and empathy in psychopaths, among other topics. In the video, she highlights the key brain chemicals and hormones involved in fear and the accompanying fight or flight response. Produced by the American Chemical Society Video by Kirk Zamieroski [Correction: At 3:50: The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is the opposite, or the counterbalance, to the SNS (sympathetic nervous system) (not the ANS or autonomic nervous system). The SNS and PNS represent the two branches of the ANS. Thanks to Canis Bonus for catching this.]

Melting metal using magnetic fields - Magnets have been the go to science party trick for a long time. If you want something a bit more hardcore than just moving things from a distance, yet still fundamentally simple, then you've just gotta melt that metal baby! 'Transmuting' Pennies into Silver and Gold - The art of transmutation is an ancient discipline in alchemy that teaches the transformation of metals, from a lesser one, to a more precious form. The Blue Bottle Reaction - Mixing and matching fluids in vials and beakers is as stereotypical as any chemistry trick can get. But, this one is indeed rather amazing, because the trick, once taken to its necessary steps, actually completes on its own… many, many times over. Bending Light Using Water - Common senses tells us that light isn't typically tangible enough to be held and bent around. But we've already known several ways to circumvent this idea. The Magnus Effect - Wings are an essential part of any airplane. Even helicopters follow this rule, only it spins around its rotor instead of being attached to the sides. Floating Screw Driver - Now for some workshop-related party trick. The floating screw driver trick isn't exactly new, and at a glance, probably doesn't even look as astonishing compared to other entries in this list. What you need is a compressed air blower, and a screwdriver. Make a Liquid Pour by Itself - If you find all the previous setups too bothersome to prepare so far, then this very easy and effortless trick can still make you and your audience's science nerves tingle. The Fire Hands Trick - Okay, now on to something even more dazzling. This next trick involves soap, water, and any type of flammable gas such as butane than can be delivered into the mixture. Dousing Candles Like a Psychic - If you ever need to put out fires like the one lit for the previous trick, then a good related trick is to put them all out using nothing, but pouring a mystical force… and some well-made carbon dioxide. The Pharaoh's Serpent - Long ago, in the distant, and ancient land of Egypt, there was one legendary feat of sorcery that was told and handed down through the generations.

Subscribe to watch more online chemistry courses & science videos: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiX8pAYWBppIbtUZTfGnRJw?sub_confirmation=1 About Atomic School: Atomic School supports the teaching of Atomic Theory to primary school & science students . We provide lesson plans, hands-on classroom resources, demonstration equipment, quizzes and a Teacher's Manual to primary school teachers. Animated videos that clearly explain the scientific ideas supports learning by both teachers and students. As a teacher, you don't have to look anywhere else to implement this program. Our work has been verified by science education researchers at the University of Southern Queensland, Dr Jenny Donovan and Dr Carole Haeusler, who confirm that primary students are capable of learning much more complex scientific concepts than previously thought, and crucially, that they love it. Students run to class! The program has been trialed in Australian schools as well as schools in the Philippines, Iran and India. It is conducted as holiday workshops at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, the Queensland Museum as well as the World Science Festival. It has attracted wide media interest, including TV, radio and print, and the research data has been presented at prestigious American Education Research Association and Australian Science Education Research Association conferences. Atomic Theory underlies all the other sciences- genetics, electronics, nanotechnology, engineering and astronomy- so an early understanding will set them up for a more successful learning sequence for all their science subjects, and support their mastery of mathematics as well. We also have extension programs that cover Biology, Physics and Astronomy to an equal depth. About Ian Stuart (Email: ian.douglas.stuart@gmail.com): The founder of Atomic School, Ian Stuart, taught Chemistry and Physics for 25 years at senior levels before he realized that his 8-year old son, Tom, could understand Atomic Theory at a much deeper level than he expected. After visiting Tom's class at school, he discovered that his peers could also grasp the abstract scientific concepts, as well as apply it usefully to the real world. Ian then developed a program to teach the advanced concepts of high school Chemistry, Physics and Biology to students 10 years younger than they normally would. He found that this engaged their interest in modern science early, and sustained it through to high school and beyond. It also sets them up for future success in their academic and career paths. Bytesize Science Presents: The Chemistry of Cheese

04:28
John Lucey, Ph.D., director of the Center for Dairy Research at University of Wisconsin in Madison, explains how cheese makers leverage chemistry to transform milk into cheese. It involves special "starter cultures" of microbes that convert lactose, "milk sugar;" into lactic acid; enzymes that "clot" milk proteins into a gel; separation of the solid curds from the watery whey; and other steps. Lucey explains how food scientists use analytical chemistry techniques to test the levels of fat, protein, and flavor compounds in cheese to ensure a tasty, nutritious product. Periodic Table Explained: Introduction

14:14
Introduction video on the periodic table being explained to chemistry school & science students . The video explains how there are 92 naturally occurring elements, one for each kind of atom, and how they are arranged into a table according to their relative weights. The expanded table is shown, and how this is abbreviated into the common Periodic Table. The division between metals, semi-metals and non-metals is discussed, with notable examples. It also shows how the elements are arranged in rows and groups, the latter containing elements with similar properties, like members of a family. Ian has a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Queensland and a Master's degree in Electrochemistry from the University of Melbourne. Connect with Atomic School on social media: http://facebook.com/AtomicSchool http://twitter.com/AtomicSchools http://instagram.com/AtomicSchools Video transcript: In the first video we saw that all the things in the world are made of incredibly tiny particles called atoms. And also that there are 92 different kinds of them. Most things have more than one type of atom in them, but when we do find something containing just one kind of atom, we call it an element. A nugget of gold is an element because it's made of only gold atoms. The atoms are too small to see with our eyes, even using a good microscope, but if we could zoom in with a magnification of a billion times we could see the individual gold atoms. Each kind of atom had a shorthand way of writing it, called its symbol, using either one or two letters. The symbol for gold is Au, taken from the ancient Latin word it, aurum. The symbol Au could refer to either a single gold atom, or the element gold consisting of many gold atoms. Scientists have made a list of all the types of atoms, starting with the lightest, hydrogen, followed by the next lightest, helium. Just heavier than these are lithium and beryllium. We could give each element a number showing its place in this list. Hydrogen's number would be 1 as it is the first in the list, helium's would be 2, and so on. Here are the first 20 elements in the list, starting with the lightest, hydrogen, and going all the way to the heaviest, uranium. Since there are 92 elements in the list, uranium's number must be 92

Incredible Chemical Reaction!

Add me on Facebook. (click LIKE on Facebook to add me) http://www.facebook.com/brusspup Download the song in this video: Song name: Monolith iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/monolith-single/id596457486 Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Monolith/dp/B00B60NGFY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378343773&sr=8-1&keywords=monolith+brusspup There are no editing tricks in the video. All of the reactions that you see are uncut and play at the original speed. This is a classic chemical reaction. It's called the iodine clock reaction. There are several variations of how this chemical reaction can be performed using different chemicals than the ones I used in the video. You can order clock reaction kits from several science related websites. You can also use simple store bought chemicals like vitamin C, iodine, hydrogen peroxide and starch. A quick internet search will turn up multiple ways of performing the experiment. Even though I've played around with the clock reaction experiment before I've always wanted to capture the reaction as the liquid was being poured. To me, this is the most stunning way of demonstrating the reaction. Here's the other version of the clock reaction I made several years ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeDhaWEEvfg
