The Chemistry of Fear - Bytesize Science

04:29
With Halloween just a few days away, millions are flocking to horror films and haunted houses for their annual dose of terror. Our latest video uncovers the chemistry behind the spine-tingling sense of fear. "Fear is the expectation or the anticipation of possible harm... We know that the body is highly sensitive to the possibility of threat, so there are multiple pathways that bring that fear information into the brain," explains Abigail Marsh, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Georgetown University. Marsh's research focuses on the neuroscience of fear and empathy in psychopaths, among other topics. In the video, she highlights the key brain chemicals and hormones involved in fear and the accompanying fight or flight response. Produced by the American Chemical Society Video by Kirk Zamieroski [Correction: At 3:50: The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is the opposite, or the counterbalance, to the SNS (sympathetic nervous system) (not the ANS or autonomic nervous system). The SNS and PNS represent the two branches of the ANS. Thanks to Canis Bonus for catching this.]

Bytesize Science Presents: The Chemistry of Cheese

04:28
John Lucey, Ph.D., director of the Center for Dairy Research at University of Wisconsin in Madison, explains how cheese makers leverage chemistry to transform milk into cheese. It involves special "starter cultures" of microbes that convert lactose, "milk sugar;" into lactic acid; enzymes that "clot" milk proteins into a gel; separation of the solid curds from the watery whey; and other steps. Lucey explains how food scientists use analytical chemistry techniques to test the levels of fat, protein, and flavor compounds in cheese to ensure a tasty, nutritious product. Subscribe to watch more online chemistry courses & science videos: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiX8pAYWBppIbtUZTfGnRJw?sub_confirmation=1 About Atomic School: Atomic School supports the teaching of Atomic Theory to primary school & science students . We provide lesson plans, hands-on classroom resources, demonstration equipment, quizzes and a Teacher's Manual to primary school teachers. Animated videos that clearly explain the scientific ideas supports learning by both teachers and students. As a teacher, you don't have to look anywhere else to implement this program. Our work has been verified by science education researchers at the University of Southern Queensland, Dr Jenny Donovan and Dr Carole Haeusler, who confirm that primary students are capable of learning much more complex scientific concepts than previously thought, and crucially, that they love it. Students run to class! The program has been trialed in Australian schools as well as schools in the Philippines, Iran and India. It is conducted as holiday workshops at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, the Queensland Museum as well as the World Science Festival. It has attracted wide media interest, including TV, radio and print, and the research data has been presented at prestigious American Education Research Association and Australian Science Education Research Association conferences. Atomic Theory underlies all the other sciences- genetics, electronics, nanotechnology, engineering and astronomy- so an early understanding will set them up for a more successful learning sequence for all their science subjects, and support their mastery of mathematics as well. We also have extension programs that cover Biology, Physics and Astronomy to an equal depth. About Ian Stuart (Email: ian.douglas.stuart@gmail.com): The founder of Atomic School, Ian Stuart, taught Chemistry and Physics for 25 years at senior levels before he realized that his 8-year old son, Tom, could understand Atomic Theory at a much deeper level than he expected. After visiting Tom's class at school, he discovered that his peers could also grasp the abstract scientific concepts, as well as apply it usefully to the real world. Ian then developed a program to teach the advanced concepts of high school Chemistry, Physics and Biology to students 10 years younger than they normally would. He found that this engaged their interest in modern science early, and sustained it through to high school and beyond. It also sets them up for future success in their academic and career paths. Ian has a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Queensland and a Master's degree in Electrochemistry from the University of Melbourne. Chemistry - Rocks: Science Exam Tips

03:16
Get Unlimited Access to GCSE Tutor Videos & Online Revision Here for £19.99: http://www.revisionapp.co.uk/product/online-gcse-revision. The last topic was the Periodic Table. Have a look back over that and then let's move forward on to Rocks and Weathering. There are three main types of rock; Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic. Now, one can go from one form to another through something called the rock cycle, and it all starts deep underneath the earth's crust with a liquid called magma. Magma, when it erupts from the surface of the earth, is known as lava and it comes out of a volcano. Now, when magma erupts out of a volcano, it also spits out dust, ash and other particles as well. When the magma, now also known as lava, mass cool down, it forms something called igneous rocks. The size of crystals in a rock depends on how fast or slow the magma cools. So the different types of the igneous rocks you see may have different sizes of large or small crystals. There can also be different colours depending on the chemicals inside the lava. Over time, as these rocks move around due to weather or as animals pick them up and move them, they can break down. Here, they transform into a second type of rock called sedimentary. Sedimentary rocks will be squashed on sea or river beds under heat and pressure, and as they contain fossils of plants and animals, can be converted into crude oil over time by the continuous pressure and heat of layers and layers of other sedimentary rock. Another type of rock, usually found in mountain structures, is called Metamorphic. It includes marble or slate. These are the hardest types of rock we have and are formed under severe heat and pressure. This can be seen on the side of mountain ranges in the form of discreet layers, or bands, of different colours. So let's go through the rock cycle again. We start from magma, which erupts from a volcano as lava, forming an igneous rock, for example granite. After a while, sedimentary rock is formed on the sea or river bed, which may contain fossils from plants or animals. Then we get metamorphic rock formed under severe heat and pressure, for example, marble or slate. Erosion is the process of weathering down the rock. This can happen in many ways. The three I'm going to describe to you are called freeze/thaw, exfoliation and chemical. Freeze/thaw is the start of wear in a cold, say desert, environment. Water will seep into a crack in a rock and every night as the temperature drops, the water will freeze. As it freezes it bends and causes the rock to crack. In the daytime it will warm up again so the water evaporates. This process will continually freeze the water inside to crack and then break it apart until that portion of the rock falls off. So freeze/thaw weathering is when water seeps into a crack in the rock, freezes overnight and eventually breaks down the rock from the inside because of the water expanded as it freezes. The next type is called exfoliation. This happens in our environment where it goes from hot to cold very quickly. As the rock heats up, it will start to expand and the surface of the rock will begin to crack. As it cools down, it shrinks. As this process continues over time, the rapid cooling and shrinking will cause the outside of the rock to peel off or exfoliate, like the layers of an onion. The last type is called chemical weathering. This happens when the rock's been exposed to harsh chemicals, mostly acid rain. This can be seen on buildings. For example, when the animal carvings or gargoyles in very old buildings start to discolour and are worn down, they give a melted sort of appearance. That's chemical weathering. We just learnt about Rocks and Weathering. Go back over if you need to. Now let's go on to Substances and Chemical Reactions.

Saint Patrick's day is this Sunday, and there are many ways to celebrate like Irish soda bread at breakfast or corned beef and cabbage for dinner. For those celebrating St. Patrick's Day with green beer, moderation is key. Alcohol has several negative effects on your body -- many of which can amount to a miserable morning after. Find out the science behind those brutal hangovers and alcohol's other effects on the body in our latest video, and maybe we can inspire some caution in your celebration this year. Produced by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. [Correction: The structure displayed at 2:44 is not amyl alcohol, but isoamyl acetate. The Debate Over Pubg New Weapons Top Tips of Pubg Quotes

For competitive play its important to draw players in with more than simply bragging rights. Therefore, only a mid-range smartphone that players may have the game perfectly. Unfortunately, theres no game out there which exactly resembles GGO. A game like PUBG needs to be handled with care. For example in Pubg, the gameplay is sort of slow when compared with its two concurrents, thus if the looting process is adaptive he must be also slow to be prosperous. The graphics werent as developed as various other versions, and it doesnt support split-screen for the Multiplayer. Equipping a unique mod before starting a match permits you to carry eight of them simultaneously! Pubg New Weapons - Dead or Alive? If a person is suspected of travelling abroad to take part in terrorism, police can seize passports for as much as 30 days while the person is investigated further. The very first step on that is to construct a Boosted Implosion bomb. So hunting the enemies is the very best approach to have higher chance to receive fantastic items, hence higher opportunity to win the game eventually. For example, you are within fire and attempting to sprint to a cover.
