Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, more commonly known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London, England. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison since at least 1100, although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard the Lionheart, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site. The Tower of London has played a prominent role in English history. It was besieged several times and controlling it has been important to controlling the country. The Tower has served variously as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, the home of the Royal Mint, a public records office, and the home of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. From the early 14th century until the reign of Charles II, a procession would be led from the Tower to Westminster Abbey on the coronation of a monarch. In the absence of the monarch, the Constable of the Tower is in charge of the castle. This was a powerful and trusted position in the medieval period. In the late 15th century the castle was the prison of the Princes in the Tower. Under the Tudors, the Tower became used less as a royal residence, and despite attempts to refortify and repair the castle its defences lagged behind developments to deal with artillery. The peak period of the castle's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace, such as Elizabeth I before she became queen, were held within its walls. This use has led to the phrase "sent to the Tower". Despite its enduring reputation as a place of torture and death, popularised by 16th-century religious propagandists and 19th-century writers, only seven people were executed within the Tower before the World Wars of the 20th century. Executions were more commonly held on the notorious Tower Hill to the north of the castle, with 112 occurring there over a 400-year period. In the latter half of the 19th century, institutions such as the Royal Mint moved out of the castle to other locations, leaving many buildings empty. Anthony Salvin and John Taylor took the opportunity to restore the Tower to what was felt to be its medieval appearance, clearing out many of the vacant post-medieval structures. In the First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison, and witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage. After the Second World War, damage caused during the Blitz was repaired and the castle reopened to the public. Today the Tower of London is one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. It is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces and is protected as a World Heritage Site. Tower of London to Wapping - London's Best Riverside Walk

12:52
Tower of London to Wapping - London's Best Riverside Walk. This is one of my favourite riverside walks which takes in some lovely old historic pubs too along the river Thames. Starting at The Tower of London see Dead Man's Hole underneath Tower Bridge where dead bodies used to wash up. Then past St Catherine's Dock where Shackleton departed Britain for the last time and down Wapping High Street. Then take a look along the shore of the River Thames where you might go mudlarking and find a Tudor shoe or some other ancient artifact. Continue to the Town of Ramsgate Pub and learn the history of Judge Jeffreys, the hanging judge and where Captain Bligh had his final drink with the crew of The Bounty. Past Wapping Pier Head and then to Execution Dock and the Captain Kidd Pub and Thames River Police. After that past Wapping Station and onto The Prospect of Whitby, one of the oldest riverside pubs in London called Devil's Tavern. Then in Limehouse and past the London Hydraulic Company and Captain Cook's house which used to be the old Chinatown and inspired Sherlock Holmes, Fu Man Chu and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Then finish your walk at The Grapes where Charles Dickens used to drink and which features in Our Mutual Friend. 19th May 1536: Execution of Anne Boleyn in the Tower of London

02:20
http://www.HistoryPod.net On the 19th May 1536, Anne Boleyn – Henry VIII’s second wife and mother of the future Elizabeth I – was beheaded in the Tower of London, having been found guilty of adultery, treason, and incest. Although found unanimously guilty by a jury of 27 peers, the evidence against her was questionable. Only one person accused of an affair with Anne admitted his guilt, and this was extracted under torture. Some historians believe that her involvement in court politics led the influential Thomas Cromwell to engineer her downfall. Meanwhile, other historians point to the problem of her not having bourn the king a male heir. A series of miscarriages in the months prior to her arrest further suggested she wouldn’t do so in the future. The lack of a son from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, had originally driven Henry to find a new wife. Anne found herself in a precarious situation. She gave birth to a stillborn son in January 1536, and soon afterwards Henry took Jane Seymour – one of Anne’s ladies-in-waiting – as a mistress. Since she was queen, the Treason Act meant that the queen’s infidelity was treasonous. The punishment for a woman was burning alive, but Henry commuted it to beheading and had an expert French swordsman brought over to carry out the execution with a single stroke. Anne maintained her innocence to the end. She was buried in an unmarked grave, but the site was identified in 1876 and is now marked with a marble slab.

OOPS! "Tower of London" REALLY built in 300 AD, then CATASTROPHE, 'fixed up' by "Normans"

09:06
Link to medallion depicting White Tower: http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=1616647&partId=1&searchText=medallion+beaurains&place=34855&page=1 I've earlier said the Normans didn't built the Norman mottes. Now this! Some might say I have something against the Normans... if that is their real name? Weren't they really 'West Romans'? The West Frankish state was a vestige of the Carolingian 'Roman Empire'! Did they see themselves as re-conquering Romans?! Here is the full quote just in case no-one believes me: "There is a connection between coins and medals going back at least to Roman times. The Romans struck coins which commemorated some particular event or showed some particular person. They were soon striking commemorative medals. One of the most famous formed part of what is known as the Arras Treasure. This famous treasure, which takes its name from the find-spot, contained a large gold medal showing an interesting scene. Constantinus Chlorus is shown on horseback, facing right. Before him is a kneeling figure with arms outstretched. Below the figure is the abbreviation LON, for London. In the foreground a Roman galley filled with soldiers is afloat on the Thames. What has always intrigued the author is the fact that the kneeling figure has almost forecast the appearance of the present tower of London since it bears something of the appearance of the White Tower, which in fact was not built for some centuries to come (c. 1072). Military architecture had not, apparently, changed so much in the interval. The subject of the whole little scene thus commemorated is the entry of Constantius Chlorus into London" (p. 104, Beginner's Guide to Coin Collecting, Howard Linecar.) In conventional history the Normans conquered everyone and built everything, but this is not quite true! The Tower of London is obviously a Roman building, Late-Roman in style. It is very clear that the Normans at least 'fixed it up', or were they really, actually Normans? Normans derive from the Soissons Kingdom which seems to have been the only remaining offshoot of the west- Roman Empire, and the LAST TO FALL... it fell AFTER Rome! It therefore retained enormous vestiges of its former glory. When the Normans invaded England, did they actually see themselves as returning re-conquerors? Did they call themselves 'Normans' as we call them or did they have another name for themselves? In short.... 'what's going on?!' The Norman state was actually the West-Frankish state with a degree of Autonomy and not some independent 'Normandy' at all. But here is the thing... what's the tower of London doing on this British coin of Constantine II? I read this in a book on numismatics long ago and decided to make a video about it! It seems the tower was possibly devastated in the SUPER-CATASTROPHE which triggered the Dark Ages. I believe that the population of Europe declined 95% in this time... a subject for another video! If we look at the Tower of London is it really Norman or earlier? It appears Late Roman to me. In fact the Normans are said to have 'rebuilt' a lot of Roman buildings in England. Why on earth would this be? They also re-built Colchester Cathedral which I consider to actually be Camelot! The fact is there was some succession of catastrophes in the Dark Ages which NOBODY talks about! You even look at maps from the period... French maps and they think that the English territories were inside the political boundaries of France?! Important links! Top London Attractions - Tower of London - England United Kingdom - Tower of London History

00:47
Are you searching for the top attractions in London which you will need to visit while you are in the city? There are a couple of ones to be mentioned which people always know about and visit without even searching, one of these touristic attractions in London is the Tower of London. The history of the Tower of London was written first when William the conqueror built a mighty stone tower at the centre of his London fortress back in the 1070's, defeated Londoners back at that time used to look at this tower in awe, which is exactly the same thing now when all those millions of visitors come to check it on a yearly basis. The Tower of London is not just a building that astonished people when they come to visit it from the outside, but it is also the home for different traditions that are still living in it until today, such as the Ceremony of the Keys as well as the ghost stories and the terrible tales of torture and execution. The Tower of London is also the protector of the Crown Jewels, it is home of the Yeoman Warders and its legendary guardians, the pampered ravens and it has also been home to a wide array of institutions that include the Royal Mint, the Royal Armouries and even a zoo. Through the long history of the Tower of London, it has been known as the secure place where the royal possessions were guarded and even where the royal family itself was guarded in the times of war and invasions. Over all those years, the Tower of London was used as a luxurious place by the monarchs, but we should never forget that this tower has been always seen as a symbol of fear as well and this goes back to the rivals and enemies who the kings and queens used to imprison within the walls of the tower. The Tower of London is also known as the White Tower and it is located on the north bank of River Thames in central London; it is found just beside the famous Tower Bridge of London which is one of the other top attractions of the city. The Tower is a complex of several buildings which are located within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat, and there were several phases of expansion in the 12th and 13th centuries which were mainly done under Kings Richard I, Henry III and Edward I. With all the things that have written the history of this huge castle in London and the different things it is considered responsible for, like protecting the royal possessions and the royal family at times, it has also been used as a prison in the 16th and 17 centuries and there were many famous figures who have fallen into disgrace during that time, like Elizabeth I before she became a queen, Sir Walter Raleigh and Elizabeth Throckmorton who were all held within the walls of the castle. This use of the castle actually led to the appearance of the phrase "sent to the tower", but despite this reputation about the place when it comes to torture and execution, there were only seven people executed within the tower before the World Wars of the 20th century. After the World Wars, the castle was restored several times and was used for different reasons, it was also used for executions once again and eventually it was restored and opened to the public so that they could come in and check the place. Today, the Tower of London is one of the top attractions of the city that is visited by millions of people per year. The Tower of London is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces and it is protected as a World Heritage Site under the ceremonial charge of the Constable of the Tower. When London is mentioned in any conversation there is, there are a couple of touristic attractions which are usually mentioned. The Tower of London is one of those attractions as well as the Tower Bridge that is located right next to it - and it is believed that the two names are related to one another - but there is also Buckingham Palace which is considered the most famous now in the city (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z57xeLn1Zaw), Big Ben which identifies London as being an important attraction in it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_pETuPDFSM), London Eye which is now known as Coco-Cola London Eye and which gives people views all over the city (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHtQq7wQTQc), there is also the Chinatown in London (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SXA8F6fpZI), London Aquarium (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij6ebsE3EF8) and the famous Natural History Museum (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=staR4hsWHzc). Looking back into the history of the places that you visit in every single city you travel to will bring lots of information and will give you the chance to try and picture it all, adding new information to your mind. Tower of London & Tower Bridge Vacation Travel Video Guide

09:34
Travel video about destination Tower of London & tower Bridge in England. The Tower Of London is the home of the Crown Jewels and one of the many historical sights of the United Kingdom’s capital city. Just as with the British Empire, the Tower has a colourful and dramatic past and it was originally designed as a fortress by William The Conqueror. Not far from the Tower’s original main entrance prisoners were taken through Traitors’ Gate into the notorious dungeons. In1843 the moat dried up but the old fortress and its towers have survived to the present day. It must have been a terrifying experience to be imprisoned there and few prisoners lived to tell the tale of the rigours of the Tower. Many members of the English royal family were executed in the Tower but there were times when official execution was replaced by cold-blooded murder. Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry The Eighth, was the most famous of those who fell victim to the Tower. Tower Bridge is a masterpiece of Victorian technology and construction. Its drawbridge once allowed large sailing ships to travel to the centre of the city. Today, however, the majority of large ships dock downstream and now the famous old bridge is raised around nine hundred times each year to facilitate the passage of numerous vessels that travel along the Thames. Even today the River Thames is ruled by this majestic bridge and the spectacular view from the Bridge’s 50 metre high walkway is truly fascinating. Tower Bridge and the Tower Of London are without any doubt two of London’s most striking and fascinating landmarks. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Olympic torch makes spectacular entrance at Tower of London

03:54
(20 Jul 2012) STORYLINE: After years of preparation and months of build-up, the Olympic flame finally arrived in London on Friday, an escort of commandos dropping from the Sky with the torch at one of UK capital's most famous landmarks, the Tower of London. Royal Marine Martyn Williams carried the Olympic torch as he rappelled down from a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter into the Tower on the shore of the River Thames. The commando's grand entrance plunged the symbol of the games into the city's historic heart, bringing Olympic pageantry to the British capital that last held the event in 1948. Crowds lined the city's famed river banks to see the torch arrive, while Yeoman warders, the ceremonial Tower guards popularly known as Beefeaters, looked on from inside the landmark's grounds. British Olympic hero Dame Kelly Holmes toured the ramparts with the torch held aloft before passing over to Londoner Abul Kasam who was chosen as a torch bearer for his volunteer work in the city. For Londoners, the arrival of the torch ignites a time of excitement, as well as four weeks of extreme crowds and transport strains. Month of heavy rain and a constant stream of headlines about the failure of security contractor G4S have also cast an atmosphere of gloom over the build up to the games. However it's a gloom London Mayor Boris Johnson says will be lifted by the torch's arrival. "As it spreads through the city I know that it's radiance will dispel any last remaining clouds of dampness and anxiety that may hover over some parts of the media in this country," he bellowed from the tower. "It will spread the crackling bushfire of Olympic enthusiasm throughout this city and the country," he added. The enthusiasm is already well and truly with Holmes, a British double gold medal winner in 2004. "To be able to bring the flame into London for the first time, into the Tower of London, run around the tower of London with the Olympic flame, our flame, that's going the light the cauldron in a week's time - I mean what do you say? It's amazing, amazing," she gushed after the ceremony. The flame has been to every corner of the United Kingdom on its 8,000-mile (12,900 kilometre) journey ahead of its showcase moment at the Olympics' July 27 opening ceremony. Friday was Day 63 of its 70-day journey, which has included travel on boats, planes, horses and hot air balloons. The Haunted Tower of London - Halloween 2012

01:36
The Haunted Tower of London - as part of the travel series by GeoBeats. These days a throng of visitors descend upon the Tower of London however, many may not realize that the historic landmark has a darker past as well. Founded in 1066, it has served as a royal court, a prison, a mint, and an armory. Given its long and varied history, it is no surprise that there have been numerous reports of haunted spirits at the Tower of London. What did not help was the fact that this is where thousands of people were imprisoned, brutally tortured, and executed . Among those executed was Queen Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII. According to history.com, out of all the ghosts seen across England, hers is one of the most frequently spotted. She was executed in 1536 on multiple charges which included witchcraft, treason, and adultery. Boleyn's ghost is said to haunt not only the Tower of London but also her home in Kent where she grew up. BBC reports that Thomas a Becket was allegedly the first ghost to be seen at the fortress. He was the Archbishop of Canterbury during the rule of King Henry II and was brutally killed by his knights. These are only two of the haunted spirits roaming the Tower complex. There are many others to discover. When do you plan to visit the Tower of London?

One of the greatest historical places in England. It was built by william the conqueror around 1066 and was a great medieval palace for a long time as well as a prison and a dungeon. It is famous for its many towers including the bloody tower where the two princes were murdered. Anne Boleyn and katherine howard were executed on tower green and their bodies lie in the chapel right behind the execution site in st peter ad vincula. In the wakefield tower, there is graffiti carved into the walls from prisoners from long ago. There is graffiti known to be carved by lady jane grey or her husband who was known as the 9 day queen. She was executed within the tower by Queen Mary who is now known as bloody Mary. Elizabeth I was also kept in the tower at one point for false accusations against her. Sir Walter Raleigh was also kept prisoner here for almost 12 years! This place is known to be a very haunted place due to its dark historical past. Also famous for housing the crown jewels where many tourists come to see them. It currently has the fit for a king exhibit which displays henry VIII's actual armour. Known to be a haunted castle

The Historic Tower of London

02:17
The Tower of London is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 until 1952, although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. The peak period of the castle's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace were held within its walls. This use has led to the phrase "sent to the Tower". In the First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison, and witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage. After the Second World War, damage caused during the Blitz was repaired and the castle reopened to the public. Today the Tower is one of the world's most famous and spectacular fortresses. Discover its 900-year history as a royal palace and fortress, prison and place of execution, mint, arsenal, menagerie and jewel house. The Tower contains enough buildings and exhibits to keep a family busy for a full day, with plenty of both warlike and domestic contents. QUESTIONS? We would like to hear from you!
