5. Quake Champions,
Originally released into early access back in 2017, Quake champions has been in the pre-release stage for the better half of 2018, which focuses on bringing back the fast paced arena shooter games that the franchise is known for while also having stages that are reminicient of layouts found in other popular arena shooters we have had over the years. Taking some level design notes from games like goldeneye to halo, Quake champions is a fun team focused shooter, that has a little bit of a learning curve but also rewards players for trying new things. This game features a free to play option, allowing players with default characters, who can later go ahead and purchase characters individually. This game is ranked number five on the list, as the first competitive fields of quake are only starting to emerge as this game is still in pre-release, however, with the worldwide release creeping closer and closer, and the game being a breath of fresh air that still breathes nostalgia, we are pretty sure this game is going to be a hit.
4. Black Ops 4
Another game that isn’t quite here just yet, Call of duty Black ops 4 is set to take the stage in October. Call of Duty has always had a competitive league circling around it, but there is a special place in the hearts of players who have played in the Black Ops series made by Treyarch. Over the past few years Activision has hit some patchy spots with their call of duty releases, but with this next entry looking like a hybrid of Black ops 3 and the widley popular Black Ops 2, mixed with bringing players back on the ground, this call of duty game is looking very promising. Plus the addition of a battle royale mode that is doing something different than the popular BR games like fortnite and PUBG is more or less a well welcomed feature, and while it doesn’t look like competitive zombies will be a thing yet, some of the new and refined multiplayer gametypes look extremely promising.
3. Rainbow Six Siege
This game has come a long way from where it started, and has really gained an avid player base over the past two years. Initially released in December of 2015, Rainbow Six Siege, pits players in a 5v5 match, where operators must scale buildings, breach walls, and eliminate other players to win the round. While initially, a lot of inspiration for this game clearly was drawn from Call of Duty’s search and destroy gametype, this game really has become its own over the years, with a dedicated and committed development team who are constantly adding new operators and maps to the game, including game changing features every season that completley changes the ways and approaches that players take. With such an active development team, its no suprise this game has had three full supported years, with a growing playerbase, as each update brings something fresh for players to enjoy.
Counterstrike Global Offensive has been a huge hit on the PC pretty much since it originally released in 2012, and has since garnered a huge international following with players who are extremely competitive. Staying true to the valve roots this FPS doesn’t have any ADS, and focuses in on accuracy of shots being the main key to the competitive side of this game. In a typical CSGO game, money is earned within each round that can then in turned be used to purchase more powerful weapons that can either be used or dropped for your teammates in an attempt to give your side an edge over the competition. CS GO might be a slightly older title, but it has an extremely active and competitive playerbase, and you can jump into this game for a relatively low price.
This game ended up being a pretty big breakthrough success that not a lot of people really expected when this game initially released, but its not suprise that it won the best ongoing game at the game awards last year. While overwatch has several different gametypes which helps keeps things fresh, when committing to playing a game for a long time. Overwatch also features beautiful level designs, and a large cast of characters each with their own perks, counters and balances to other players that makes this game easy for new players to jump into the action, while still providing an interesting meta for the more experienced players. Overwatch is fast paced, and fun, and it looks like a game that will still be supported for quite some time in the future.
