NO Virtual Console On Nintendo Switch?

8277 ratings | 187284 views
Why is there no Virtual Console for Nintendo Switch? The Wii, Wii U AND 3DS all had a Virtual Console, so what is taking Nintendo so long to put one on the Switch? Gamecube, N64, NES... ANYTHING?! I disagree with Nintendo and indie titles are in competition. Especially when it's all fighting for space and cloud saves. Nintendo isn't saying they're not putting a virtual console yet. They're saying no virtual console period. And that's a problem. Because some people don't want to dedicate their switch to indie titles. And PlayStation and Xbox support the same Indies as nintendo. Nintendo coined the term nindies to make them stand out and I will always think that as a marketing ploy. Let's be honest....this is going to force people to mod their switch or emulate them on other systems. It doesn't really resolve the problem. And I find it crazy if you think that's the main reason why.
Graham J Hall Audio (3 months ago)
Nice theory lads, I also predict they have also kept the Eshop back to extend the value of the Mini Nes & SNES, titles will be released when the paid online subscription starts. 👌

Switch VC will be subscription based, and its coming with the online service This September. Nintendo has more or less said this.

Since there is no virtual console I guess the eShop is a waste of space for me

I just wanna play Link to the Past on switch

I just want kirby nightmare in dreamland...
Lon Born (4 days ago)
I bought this system assuming there would be a virtual console. I'm not playing indie games so they better start pumping out old games I want or they can have my switch back.
John Dela Cruz (7 days ago)
what's the point of virtual console if i can just emulate it on my phone+better bluetooth controller?
Emmanuel Kelley (8 days ago)
why don't you play arcade archives its essentially vc
vincent hammons (9 days ago)
they are releasing the crappiest old school games on switch not the ones we want, like all the zelda games, or other rpg's
OmegaChase1002 (13 days ago)
sooo instead of just giving the indie stuff more promotion, they take away the option to play paper mario on my switch? I'm not too sure about that.
Still I would drop hundreds of dollars if they had a VC with GameCube/ Wii titles

F**k Indies, I want my N64 Games!!!! 😭

If a game is good. I'm going to buy it. Because having Super Mario 64 and old retro games aren't going to stop me from buying a new indie games that logic doesn't work. Buy rip off indie games of the real games you want to play. Switch. Brawlout Urban trials playground. I'm sure in like 4 years they'll put GameCube games on here like the Xbox one did with the 360

pretty lame that it is officially not coming. Not thrilled at the prospect of a subscription service being the only way to get these games on switch. Nintndo has to be sure everyone will continue clamoring for ther classic mini consoles as well. Greedy bastards

I want OOT on my Switch so I can visit lon lon ranch, then turn around and visit it 100 years later..half destroyed!😄 I don't have a 3ds anymore, so this is my only option. Make it happen Nintendo!!
Bob Rob (2 months ago)
It would be cool to play old GameCube games on a portable system. Lost opportunity for Nintendo. On the other hand there is Xbox that shovels out dozens of old games a month and uses it as a crutch so they don't have to come out with new games. I'll just emulate off of PC.

Actually there is a way to play Game Boy Color games on you Nintendo Switch!! Ive made a video on the topic right here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qsNIk7bVgg&t=2s

This video got me to subscribe! I really enjoyed your Eshop videos, but this one was a great insight into the mindset of Nintendo. I hadn't considered that the success of Nindies could have impacted their decision to hold off on releasing the VC. It's an interesting idea and one that makes a lot of sense. Having Arlo on was a perfect cutaway. Keep up the great work!

Just give us gamecube games. They lost backward comp over 10 years ago, and wii games, which were, were on the wii u's virtual console! I only have about 7 gamecube games, because its super annoying in Australia to find games online.

@BeatEmUps: Actually Nintendo switch his not going to call it virtual console for the Nintendo switch, the first one his called the Nintendo entertainment system package, that come out this fall, if they don't delay it more, with the paid online services, and when you paid for the online service you get does game for free, with the added feature of online play, for example you play 2 player Super mario bros.3 online with your friend, and you will also be able to voice chat with your friend while you play online with the Nintendo app, if you have a smart phone, and for people that don't have smart phone they can just improvice and voice chat on Discord, or skype, and also if you don't pay for the online services, you can still download does game for full price, but they will not have the online feature, and the later package, if you are already on the paid services, you will not have to pay as mush for the new arrival, since the paid services comes with a discount on download of classic game, and it would include the added online feature. I'm not sure if i understood correctly, so don't take that as 100% accuracy.

am I the only person who hasn't bought a single 3rd party game on the switch? the thought of having indie games downloaded onto my switch actually disgusts me... but let me tell you how many virtual console nintendo games I would buy if they were on there!
jake d (2 months ago)
Slightly off topic yet somewhat related. Nintendo should make their own Game Pass program sincerely. I've been a member for just 3 days and ive downloaded at least 8 games already. Just trying and dumping game for new games. this program is perfect for a me personally.

Yep, no virtual consul
Gungho73 (2 months ago)
I think the frustration for people like myself comes from the idea that going forward, Nintendo will have a common architecture it can learn and consistently utilize with a partner in Nvidia for at least 2 more generations in theory (Nintendo could of course Nintendo and go a completely different direction with a future console in order to shake the market up again). So with this concept, it would be easier to simply start over now, as they've been willing to do on the Wii's gross limitations and Wii U's poor architecture, and build going forward in a "future proof" (as much as you can get in the console game industry) manner with virtual console or whatever they choose to either rebrand, or not rebrand shall we say the available titles as; they could just release without the VC sticker alongside similar 3rd party titles already on the Switch in normalizing fashion. Which is the one thing we can pin our hopes on, that those games show up simply without the sticker to avoid disrupting the marketplace flow. So of course, Nintendo has decided to go a different path then from the one that logically makes sense at the current time. The idea that they'd finally be able to secure their past catalogue for a significant forseeable future and choose not to is simply baffling. At launch, the priority should've absolutely been main development on major projects and developing a relationship/storefront for the hundreds of developers, mostly Indie, ready to jump on. That doesn't mean that in the background, at this point with the #'s available on the store, they couldn't simply dripfeed title's. I dunno, i may have rambled a bit at the end there, early in morn as is. I'm just annoyed that Nintendo seems to find ways to misunderstand the market's interest time and again with its misinterpretation of previous failures. As far as they've certainly come since the lead up to the Switch, they still have a ways to go.

Metroid Prime Trilogy, Xenoblade Chronicle (1), games, games, games, games. It's not about fucking 'replaying this game for the millionth time', it's about playing a game for the FIRST TIME.
Luca Dario Bützberger (2 months ago)
Nintenco couls just release some old games with new additions. More settings etc. Not just a copy of a rom on a bad emulator like on the other nintendo systems. Colour mode for all Gameboy games, a ton of filters, live roleback, a theme for your switch for every game, soundtrack included to the game. They could release many old games but they should do some rework to make it a better experience on a modern system. Even the worst emulator on PC can do more than the virtual console. Nintendo should slowly release old games with new goodies for the fans. The thing is that they should bind these old games to the nintendo account. When I buy e.g A link to the past for the switch, I should be able to download it and play it for free on every new system they release. Buy it once and play it forever. It would help for future systems so that these games do not steal this many salef from indie games.

This video made me realise that I haven't touched my switch in months
Reox8888 (2 months ago)
Your argument appears to be that Nintendo wants to be the good guy and let other companies thrive because old Nintendo games would sell too well? Why would Nintendo not want to make money? You do touch on the fact that VC would compete with SNES classic in sales, which to me is a much more valid point. Never forgot that Nintendo is a business and their reason to exist is to make money.

Devin Craig (2 months ago)
I was thinking they were gonna make it coincide with the paid online to try and lighten things up for people who DON'T want to pay for online. Give them something at the same time that they may like, and free VC games would help people on the fence feel like they aren't paying for something they've been having for free already.

There going to add VC once they realize the indie selections are garbage.

There’s also no Virtual Console because they wanted everyone to buy their NES, SNES and (upcoming) N64 mini series. With the portability of the Switch no one would really bother with the Mini series (also you made good point about it harming the new indie game sales).
Josh Roller (2 months ago)
i know it wont happen but wouldnt it be kind of cool if nintendo did virtual console through the mini classic systems?

Ready for the jailbreaks to be more stable, wont need virtual console then, can just port the roms over from wii/gamecube/snes. problem solved since nintendo wont help :P
Cory R (2 months ago)
I will spend money for convience, but make it difficult or expensive and im just going to pirate any day. I have spent thousands of dollars on nintendo products, they could atleast give us a way to not have to rebuy games we already own on a previous VC or have a cartriage for.
Cory R (2 months ago)
How does it interfere with it, why cant we have both? I buy indis and old games. this makes no sense.

Hi! I was watching Arlo's video and he told me to watch this video! I liked and subscribed! I really cannot wait for VC!
chuckchuk (2 months ago)
Yeah, it's a very good point! But at the same time.... Mario Galaxy in higher definition (Maybe both games together like they were originally supposed to be)... A link to the Past on the go again... But yeah, imagine if they do this a year or two later... There will be A HUGE re-surgance of switch sales, so it's a genius strategy.
D- mist (2 months ago)
It seems like you guys are implying more games and more choices of games would be a bad thing I love Indie Games as much as the next person one of my favorite games from 2017 A Hat In Time was a crowdfunded indie game but saying Indie Games wouldn't get support by consumers if a virtual console existed on the Nintendo switch dose not really sounds like a good excuse at all if anything I think virtual console cloud only be good for everyone if a Indie developer can't sell their own games I hate to say it but that's there own fault not a virtual console and... To be honest if there isn't a virtual console well I have a computer and I'm not a pirate but I will emulate their games if they don't give the option to buy throughout a valuable option to purchase AND I'm not going to buy a GameCube, Wii, Wii-U and a n64 just to play a few games most of the ones on the n64 on the resale and used Market can cost upwards of $100 and Nintendo would never see a single penny of the $100 it's all between the collectors
I still want Melee
Ray Reed (2 months ago)
I never thought from this perspective but would totally be the Arlo in this video.
Blue Phoenix (2 months ago)
virtual console will most likely be released after the close of the wii shop, or they're gonna be talking about it at E3, so either they're holding it back for people to get what they want on the wii shop and then releasing a virtual console on switch, or they're holding it back to destroy any upcoming competition
Plaid X (2 months ago)
I think most people haven’t realized it so I’ll just say it here. Nintendo’s Virtual console is coming out in September of this year along with the payed online service. If you check their website you’ll see it mentioning Super Mario bros. 3, Balloon fight, and Dr. Mario being available to download for monthly subscribers
Creepy Girl (2 months ago)
I want a virtual console so that I can Switch between playing Switch games on my pc or on my TV. If I can download the games on my PC then I don't have to buy tons of SD-cards. Or that I can connect the dock to the PC so that I can just Switch between TV dock and PC dock.
Siddharth Gupta (2 months ago)
what do you think about Nintendo making the virtual console something like the xbox game pass? wouldn't that solve the problem of people not buying indies?
Full Jacket (2 months ago)
i'm finding ur videos to be extremely opinionated than informative.... having virtual console or not, switch owners still have the choice to purchase and choose to play an indie game if they desire... ur literally removing the freedom of choice for consumers just to please a few weaker indies, seems rather selfish and less content accessible. having a large library of games only attracts more buyers and further success for any platform.... those indies are gonna do well or not regardless.
Lulles (2 months ago)
Great point! I hadn't thought about that.
Ian Doll (2 months ago)
So... the virtual console on the switch is bad because some people may choose to play their VC games over some Indie games?

While there is truth in the idea that a VC would dilute the Nindie market and divert money away from the independent developers, you must also consider the number of people who have not bought a Switch because there is no VC function. You can't loose a sale you never had in the first place, but someone who buys a VC edition of A Link to the Past might then see Blossom Knight as a 'similar to' title and go check that out as well. I believe that the Nindie's and VC can support each other, with games on the VC displaying Nindie titles on their store pages that have similar gameplay, or by sales deals that encourage people to buy Nindies, such as 'Buy Axiom Verge, get Super Metroid 50% off.'
KitRobin (2 months ago)
Screw the indies, I don't care about them, or how well their game sells. I'm a consumer, I'm not a fundraiser for indie developers. I just want virtual console games, and you're damn right I'll buy Zelda over a Zelda knockoff. That's why they're called knockoffs, because they're copycats of an already better game.

Sony has both new games and old games for sale, along with PC ports, and it's not hurting sales of any of their games I think. I happen to buy games I can currently afford and like to play. And it's always good to have more options.
Walther Penne (2 months ago)
Nintendo said (2 years ago, when Switch was still called "NX") that "The NX won´t be similar as Wii, 3DS or WiiU. It will get new games." And this is what you got. Remember? You need to SPECIFIALLY design a hardware in order to run VC. Only PC is the exception which can run VC-titles well enough becuase it has like 4-5 Ghz fast processors.
Adam Peterson (2 months ago)
Sure, it could get people to buy indie, OR it could be one of the many reasons people like me skipped the Switch. Besides, you have to pay to transfer your library, and it's a poor lazy excuse of a program compared to something like Xbox. Reliability is the problem. In 10 years, do you want to pay for your current library to transfer it to Nintendo's latest console? And if you have physical copies, good luck! They abandoned the 3DS and Wii U for the Switch. I mean, one of my nicknames for the Switch is the Wii U classic since anyone who had those games had to buy them again... As for the 3ds, it can now play about 24 of the 28 main series Pokemon games, and they abandoned that... I skipped out because Nintendo is an unreliable poor investment.
Dan Sutherland (2 months ago)
Virtual Console is great for finding old games and actually being able to play and afford them. My other solutions are buying used and Emulation. Used is great but sometimes rarer and even uncommon games come at a price I can't match. There's also games that I wanted when they came out but couldn't afford or easily find. Emulation is nice since consoles die, and replacing or fixing them again can be too expensive. I don't want to just download ROMs but I have downloaded ones I'm afraid of forgetting or ones I could never afford. I haven't played them though since it isn't ethical, it's largely a way for me to keep track of games I'd like to buy though. I do sometimes play them for games I already own though, since official Emulators are often quite inferior and save batteries dying and being able to transfer games and save files without transport hassle. So Virtual Console has been a great way of accessing the old games. That and I already have a big backlog to catch up on, and backwards compatibility is valuable to me since I've already invested, again emulators help a bit here. No Switch for me yet, maybe if I can find work that pays better.
