NO Virtual Console On Nintendo Switch?

7525 ratings | 159445 views
Why is there no Virtual Console for Nintendo Switch? The Wii, Wii U AND 3DS all had a Virtual Console, so what is taking Nintendo so long to put one on the Switch? Gamecube, N64, NES... ANYTHING?! Nice theory lads, I also predict they have also kept the Eshop back to extend the value of the Mini Nes & SNES, titles will be released when the paid online subscription starts. 👌
sloched plays (8 days ago)
Switch VC will be subscription based, and its coming with the online service This September. Nintendo has more or less said this.

Apart from that a very cool video with an interesting point of view. I love both your channels.

A puppet??? You mean, Arlo's not real???? There goes my childhood.

Hey Wood. Good points! But also Nintendo knows that the virtual console is a week point for hacks and exploits so they are also making sure the system is as air tight as possible. I doubt that Nintendo is that benevolent towads nindies

This might seem like a non issue but I was so excited that Nintendo was releasing their classic arcade games with "Arcade Archives" on the EShop but I was super bummed out to find they won't be releasing any of the Donkey Kong games because apparently Nintendo doesn't own the source code for Donkey Kong or Donkey Kong Junior. It was apparently developed by a company called  Ikegami Tsushinki Co. which is now owned by Toshiba. I don't know if Nintendo just doesn't care or if Toshiba is clinging onto it for dear life for some odd reason, but it's very strange for Nintendo to release some of their biggest early 80s arcade games on the Switch and not include 2 of the most important titles.

Maybe I'm alone, but a virtual console is one of the main reasons I bought my switch. It collects dust right now.
The Theory Kid (6 hours ago)
Think about the virtual console big seller SUPER MARIO 64 ON THE GO!!! Need I say more?
Zachary Erickson (6 hours ago)
Where are the Gamecube Games on the virtual console I heard rumors about? I want to play Eternal Darkness and Skies of Arcadia which are failed but critically acclaimed titles like Okami. I see your cat likes to sit on your lap while you play games which usually annoys me. Super Metroid is awesome but I want to mod that game and play as Samus without her suit ;3. There is a mod for that. Link to the Past also has awesome mods like the Redux edition. Rest in peace Arlo. He played Gamecube games until he ded. 5:40 What game is that? So Kamiko is a cheap Zelda clone? It wouldn't hurt to try it out.
CDInvictus (9 hours ago)
Can't wait for Hyper Light Drifter on Switch! I still think the best solution is to have VC launch in a Netflix style format along with the online service to help push it.

I think you're really overestimating the number of nostalgic 30-year olds buying the switch

just kinda over these 2 hour long games..
Dilbug (17 hours ago)
but what if you've never played anything before the DS?! I would love to play some games that everyone is saying are the best thing ever from their childhood.
Martin Tester (17 hours ago)
Where is the virtual console!! Seriously you can't see from that clip u showed it says coming in September 2018. Which makes sense as this is when they are launching online!

I left the Switch because of this reason.

My personal self deluded hope, is that the delays in virtual console are due to them developing a method to transfer your virtual console games from the wiiu to the switch..... I have so many wiiu virtual console games that i want to keep.
Zech Of The West (23 hours ago)
Meanwhile all the PC users are slowly hiding their emulators behind their backs. And the Android users too, i guess. But seriously, i would like to play Minish Cap on the Switch one day. Homebrew or otherwise.
Frank Orefice (23 hours ago)
I don't currently own a switch but if they do add the Virtual Console and I'm able to play Ocarina of Time ( I haven't played it in over a decade), I'll be running to Gamestop to get my own.

I rarely buy nindies, but i would buy max out my card buying VC games. N64 and GC omg. Also why not Wii games, and the rest of the Zelda remakes. Allow us to use the motion for Wii Sports again, dangnabbit

Seperate marketplaces would make much more sense. Now it wouldn't make the problem vanish but it would allow people (like myself) who just want to play their favourite games over and over, and those who are always looking for a new amazing experience to get what both parties want. People won't have to sift through many games to find those classics, or have to sift through the classics to find something new. The seperate marketplaces would also solve arlo's hypothetical scenario. Having them seperate would stop impulse buys or distractions.
DaBoxProductions (1 day ago)
For Nintendo I assume it’s all about timing in terms of profit. Either they release VC now and sporadically release classic games, or they wait for the independent games to die down enough where they’re forced to release VC for an income resurge. Honestly I feel the longer they wait, the more trouble they’ll put themselves into with, trying to maximize profits while allowing independent developers to die out. If they truly cared for both the developers and the gaming community they’d ween us on the classic games while promoting those indie developers that desperately rely on our support.
R31ent1ess (1 day ago)
I always assumed it was so homebrew devs wouldn’t be able to to inject ROMs as easily.
Sbrideau (1 day ago)
I just got a Switch and don't see A Link to the Past, which is my favorite Zelda game ever? Been enjoying Breath of the wild though. Oh I see what you did with this video. I do still have my very old Nintendo DS that I bought in 2004 that does have A Link to the Past.
raul Johnson (1 day ago)
Havent they already announced the online service in sept? Makes sense we will hear about VC then.
Frat Rat (1 day ago)
If these indie games play better than the classics then this shouldn't be a problem, lets face it, there are alot of "retro" indies which are low tier trash that alot of consumers are sick of. It would be a nice balanced option to house both retro vc titles and "nindies".
RzorFox (1 day ago)
Don’t forget Nintendo is selling the NES And SNES Classic at Christmas time the past few years and the virtual console would be a direct competitor to those systems.
stwbmc98 (1 day ago)
Why do people think “Nindies” is a new thing? They’ve been using that term since the Wii U.
Logic (1 day ago)
I don't like jumping platformers I'm not satisfied.
Walther Penne (1 day ago)
And to your question: You need SPECIAL hardware in order to handle VC. The 3DS DOES have special hardware, but the GPU of 3DS (Pixel/Vertex-Shaders, 4 Pixel- and 1 Vertex-shader is what the Pica 200 consists off!) is NOT good enough to handle emulation of GBA-games, DS-games etc. Since Using Pixel/Vertex-Shaders to emulate Fixed Shaders leads to HEAVY cpu-stress. You know that the 3DS` cpu was never fast to begin with (266 Mhz Arm11). And AMD/Nvidia shaders are far, far worse than even Pixel/Vertex-shaders...and eat your cpu alive for the simplest grpahics-effects (such as water/Rain, fire/ice etc). Now you get the clue what EMULATION an old hardware is about. You just need a 4 Ghz Processor to handle SNES-emulation with PERFECT accuracy. You don`t have that. And this is why you are stuck to NES/Original Gameboy-emulation on Switch max. You won`t even get to handle SNES-emulation well there since your processor is far too slow.
Logic (1 day ago)
Walther Penne (1 day ago)
lol @ 3DS VC...You call these...100 games VC? The WiiU has like 400 VC-games by end of this year! The 3DS has some Gameboy, some Gameboy-Colour and some NES-games. And that´s it. Only NEW 3DS has some more SNES-games added on that. But that`s it! Only 100 games in total. The 3Ds never got to see what it means to have true VC. It ended, before it even started. Only Wii & WiiU had VC so in reality. And the WiiU can play ALL VC-games from Wii AND comes with it´s own games, such as DS, Wii, or others.

Don't worry they'll sell you your old games back to you at full retail, because nintendo aren't cash grabbing like a stripper in a $1 dollar note shower like every nintendo gamer keeps telling me, you know why they don't do backwards compatibility... 1. every nintendo game is the same for the last 20 years 2. they dont have any new ideas because they're nintendo. If you want backwards compatibility as a nintendo gamer, grab a PC, then play all the PC games sorry 'switch' games in their natural habitat. vita gets criticised for being an indy console, switch gets complimented for it... Nintendo rose tinted glasses anyone?
Jay M (2 days ago)
The thing that I can't figure out is why there's still no internet browser. Nintendo is so slow at doing things that I've been losing interest in them. All I ever play is my PS4 now.
Rubarack (2 days ago)
I suspect Nintendo are pulling a Disney here. I mean Link to the Past has been available on the GBA, 3DS, Snes Mini, Wii and WiiU. It's hard to get excited about a barebones Switch version. If they let it be unavailable for a while then demand can start to creep up and people won't be so ready to question why they have to buy it AGAIN rather than just letting them use one of the umpteen others they bought.
Nig Man (2 days ago)
This is the same reason why Smash Switch isn’t out yet, nearly all other Nintendo titles released while Smash Switch is released would not stand a chance
Fifth Meridian (2 days ago)
or a subscriber model $5/month for most NES game $5/month for most SNES game $5/month for most N64 game $5/month for most gamecube game or $15/month for all of it. lower interference with eshop, because you're not blowing $400 on each library, just 15 a month.
Kennie Omega (2 days ago)
NO Virtual Console is the MAIN reason I havent bought a Switch
Sky Render (2 days ago)
So Thor in casual clothes wants to know what I think about the Switch VC? Well, the same thing I think about their paid online service: they put it off because they realized it wasn't going to be getting them nearly as much early on as it would a year or two down the line. Asking people to pay for online services doesn't exactly draw you new fans when you've been doing it for free, and offering up VC titles makes it much harder to talk up your remasters and remakes of those same games. Better to get everyone and their grandma playing the Switch and a bunch of remasters before they do either of those things.
ordinary Oddball (2 days ago)
This is an excellent reason TO not have a virtual console, but I doubt it's the reason that NINTENDO has in mind. Super great points though.
C. Scott Davis (2 days ago)
I know I'm an exception, but I don't especially like the 8-bit "retro" look. Maybe it's because I remember when blocky, pixelated graphics were our only option, but I much prefer old platformers that have been updated with new graphics (like "Wonder Boy") or new games with old-style game mechanics, but much better graphics (such as "Steamworld: Dig 2"). For example, I keep seeing people praise "Shovel Knight", and it does look like the type of game I would itherwise like, but I can't get past the blocky, 8-bit look. The same is true of games I used to love. I would very much like a Virtual Console for the Switch, so I could play N64 and Gamecube games (along with some Super Nintendo), but as much as I loved some of the original Nintendo games, back in the day, I just don't like the way they look. Even Zelda -- and I have always been obsessed with Zelda games, on every platform -- just isn't that appealing to me any more, unless the graphics are Super Nintendo level or better.

Wood and Arlo? In the SAME VIDEO? Yesh.
Mutt God (3 days ago)
I highly doubt this is the reason. I think its cus Nintendo still wants to make a service of the VC and because the phone app was a utter fail and they spent most likely a small chunk of revenue on the mobile platform. After it crashing and burning, plus the fact the system lacks Mic functions or has them but Nintendo has it off, Nintendo has yet to really build upon anything online for the switch. They make sure you can buy but thats it.
Alec H (3 days ago)
Virtual console is probably going to be the online service you can see it happening you get your free classic game every month

Nintendo continue to prove that gamers are the dumbest fucks on the face of this planet, here ninty gamers, buy the same games you already bought 3 times before across different Ninty hardware and we will only charge you X amount every single time because we are your personal friend. Lol

Wow, interesting points! I really have t agree, and also with curious newcomers.

Why would they do virtual console when they can make wayyy more off nostalgia marketing by making the “classic” series systems...

Nintendo is a business that likes to make money off their old games. The VC IS coming. And if the VC never happens for some dumbass reason, the hackers will fill the void.

i'll be honest. I totally forgot we were suppose to get virtual console on this I haven't needed it this time. When it goes live no doubt i'll be using it to replay my favourite games, i just haven't missed it so far.

or there is no virtual console because nintendo is trying to sell there retro mini consoles (nes and snes mini)
SaviorGabriel (3 days ago)
Considering how many Neo Geo games I've purchased on the eshop for the Switch, you're definitely onto something here.  Besides, there's certainly no shortage of retro games coming to the Switch.  Sega Ages, SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Mega Man Legacy Collection 1+2, Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2.  There's plenty to keep you occupied in the meantime.

The idea that Nintendo wouldn't want the virtual console taking from indie sales is nonsense. They wouldn't pass the opportunity to make more money by selling their already-made games over and over again. If anything, they know that indie titles could take away from virtual console sales, since they're usually so retro.
Jonny Nitpick (3 days ago)
I thought Nintendo's paid online service was to include monthly rentable Virtual Console titles? Was that just a rumor? ... Okay nope. Looked it up and it isn't a rumor. https://www.theverge.com/2018/1/31/16958022/nintendo-switch-online-service-release-date-september
Walther Penne (1 day ago)
No it wasn´t a rumour. But: It´s NOT VC-games. You only play some NES-games with added online-multiplayer. Nitnendo never advertised Switch with Virtual Console at all.

I feel that the Virtual Console would be good for the Switch for one reason that wasn't mentioned in this video: the new audience. The Switch is a huge success among hardcore gamers and casual gamers, the latter of which were left behind by the Wii U. Now Nintendo and its various franchises are back in the hands of a casual audience. Many of them might be experiencing these series for the first time. Odds are they might've heard of older games in the series or just want to have more Zelda, or experience a Metroid game before Prime 4 comes out. What do you think, Beat?

Your right, I mean the only games I really want on an virtual console are the 1st 2 pikmins, spirit tracks, and metroid prime trilogy (without motion controls) iv e been waiting for those games with decent controls.. buy the idies are great and nintendo has done well

I don't get this huge amount of new "retro" games.
C. Alexander Lydell (4 days ago)
I'm pretty new to the gaming scene. Of course I jumped on when the Wii came out, and I was one of the few who bought a Wii U. I also got into Pokemon just when ORAS came out. Beyond that, I've never gotten to play any classic games like Ocarina or Majora's mask. It sucks knowing how expensive it would be to get an original setup and game library just to play games I'd like such as the zeldas and BFBB and Smash bros. I'd get some of these in my DS and Wii U, but I'd rather save up for when it comes out on Switch so I can have them all portable. So unlike a lot of gaming veterans, I'm kind of missing out in the experiences of these games because of a lack of Switch virtual console. :/
PsychoEspeon (4 days ago)
Actually, if there is a virtual console, they would not need to put Super Mario Bros or Mario Bros since they're already Arcade Archives for them.
Discoleumas (4 days ago)
I'd love a fire emblem path of radiance port to be honest, the new fire emblems feel like they lack strategy
Lich King (4 days ago)
So because indies have no original ideas and want to rip off old games..We have to wait for the actual classics? Here's a thought. How about more (not all are guilty) indies make original ideas and let the market place decide what it wants?
Catriam Flockentanz (4 days ago)
Can somebody tell me why bordeline everyone claims that Nintendo invented the term "Nindies" for Switch indipendent games? That term has been around for _three_ years now. You might see that the Switch isn't old enough to be it's birthplace...
FilFee // Kjůrovec (4 days ago)
2:28 Here rests Arlo's wallet
Garrett Fahrney (4 days ago)
Maybe one reason they are holding it off is because they want to release all the old libraries at once, but they can't figure out how to get DS games to work on the switch, especially on the tv.
ElementalIguana (4 days ago)
Virtual console is still coming to Nintendo switch we just have to wait until September
I'm Bananas (4 days ago)
Virtual Console with decent prices. They are really giving us the wire brush to the ahole with no lube setting ridiculous prices on roms. my idea of prices 8-bit $.25 16-bit $.50 32-bit $.75 64-bit $1 128-bit $1.50
I'm kind of split on this one. As someone who hasn't played a lot of older games and didn't own a wii u, I want the virtual console. But as someone who wants to develop games for the switch, I don't want it.
Bizarre Joe (4 days ago)
I know it is unreasonable because Arlo is a puppet and all, but that bit with the time skips would have been better if he had a beard after the second skip.
