I like the presentation overall and her point concerning the importance of being understood is not said often enough. I've often said that language is a tool to communicate. However, that said, there is a counterpoint to be made. Language IS a tool as are a chainsaw and scalpel. Some amazing art can be made with a chainsaw but at other times a more precise tool is required. At least I'd like the surgeon that operates on me to feel that way. What's really required is a proper perspective and a recognition that "good enough" is often good enough and certainly beats having no tool at all.

I'm experiencing this kind of problem when I try to speak in English I can understand like 90% of what someone is saying my reading skills are pretty good my pronounciation also but when is time to speak I cannot express myself it's like my vocabulary has vanished, and she has described very well what do we need to do. She is 100% right.

I may not have this problem with English which is my second language, but in fact, I sometimes have this problem with my mother tongue. This advice is the basic idea of everything. Thank you. I really need it.
Mục đích cuối cùng là để giao tiếp nên nói dài chưa chắc đã hay. Ngắn gọn là ok.

1. paying less self-awareness on how many grammar mistakes you have made while talking 2. don't fell embarrassed, awkward and shy 3. focus on the person who you are talking to and the result you want to achieve 4. English is not an art to be mastered. it is just a tool to communicate. 5. in the real world, what matters is that you understand others and take an action instead of making no mistake. 6. symptoms of your brain shutting down :1. when you are worried about how you respond and express yourself in correct English, you may miss what the other person said 2. vocabulary disappears and word does not come out while speaking 3. lack of confidence in speaking English may be interpreted as lacking of ability in job performance.

eliana vasconcelos (19 days ago)
I don't like her explanation. Language is not just a tool! You learn culture, you learn about others, you think differently because your words and the way you see the world are different.
eliana vasconcelos (19 days ago)
Just a question: if you have been in Malaysia for so long, why did you not learn to speak the language? I think it goes both ways> English speakers should love to learn other languages as well . Just my point of view.
Marianna Pascal (15 days ago)
Saya boleh cekup Bahasa Malayu. I can speak the language. You're right. That's very important. I live here! It also helps me understand what others go through. I remember giving my first speech in Malay. I had to put some new words on the floor on paper! Lol.

Yes! English is tool not goal.Insead of focusing english we are supposed to focus on our goal. Why we want to learn english? This is basic question. When we identifiy our goal we can learn english more eaisy. :)

When speak don't focus on yourself, on the partner instead. Don't consider too much about how to speak correctly, stay focused on pushing forth the conversation.

It is really good. And I found It is a productive way learning English. I still remember I played the glass balls when I was child. If the routine was in my heart I always hit another one successfully. But If I was not sure the imaginative routine I failed each time.

Yup, language is not art, language is tool for one of people with sharp skill of your brain. Very important to communicate other people and to understand the feedback for one to one. 👍 thankyou, I have lot of knowledge that I must learn very well 🙏🏻
zhen li (25 days ago)
i thought it’s exactly what I need when I was watching your speech. I realize that I am usually nervous when I talk with people, fearing for making mistakes and being judged. Sometimes when I am relaxed or have a goal to achieve, i just focus on the conversation but not on my behavior, it works.

English is the best language in the world.

1. there must be more people than me that can't play a video game - then what? 2. although my hearing is good I just can't make out the separate words the person is saying 3. If I get most of the words in a sentence that a person is saying (rare) there is always one word I can't get - making the whole sentence unintelligible 4. colloquialisms are virtually impossible to understand - without years of experience there is no person with LOW level that can communicate

It may be helpful to those who don't speak a word of English.. but I think that.. when we need to have a complex discussion in English, it might not fit in. For example at the firm, could you guys explain the details of the work to your boss with just a few words of English and confidence? With no excuses, improving your English skills is the only way that might make our lives a bit more comfortable in this world.
