Copyright Deadlock (The Jimquisition)

http://www.patreon.com/jimquisition http://www.thejimquisition.com http://sharkrobot.com/collections/jimquisition-merch The system doesn't work, so break it some more. That's the idea behind the Copyright Deadlock, a petty scheme that highlights the absurdity of YouTube's ContentID system. How can three corporations own a single video? Well, three apparently own THIS one. Konami, Nintendo, and Rhino all believe they own this episode. Two of them want to monetize it. How does that work? Let's find out!

Thank you so much for showing me this. I have 16 copyright claims on one of my videos
Hibiki Kamishiro (2 months ago)
Sorry for necroposting, Jim, but since you are experienced in fighting copyright claims, do you happen to know the email rymserplegal@gmail.com that identifies themself as 'Remove Your Media LLC'? Basically I got a copyright claim from them for a gameplay video of Senran Kagura, so I emailed Marvelous and they replied me that they have no connection with that email address, but when I forwarded it to Youtube, they refused to remove the strike just because they "received a copyright takedown request". Do you happen to know any way I can counter this?

When you think about it there are three options do nothing and every company would kill YouTube or try and only pick the actual ones and not get enough which would cause companies to kill YouTube so the only option is to have to get some people and yes a lot of people do get fucked over but the only way for YouTube to not go the way blip did is to fuck up some people and get a lot of bastards

I wonder if you can use this technique offensively against copyright vultures. Like, if people are posting open source sound effects or stuff, and for some reason, get their video claims, and can't get the copyright claims reversed (for whatever reason), then... Couldn't you, with the same techniques (and with the video owner's permission), throw claims of your own to deadlock the video. Like a copyright vigilante or something - doing an evil act for a good outcome. This doesn't apply to trailer footage or anything, but things like that one 10 hour video of white noise that got hit by a copyright claim by some vulture.

Can i make 2 channels? Channel A, has original music and footage 100% owned by me. I then make Channel B. and using channel A I claim a monetization copyright strike so channel A gets all the revenue blocking any outsiders from getting it and still allowing me to get my cash flowz?

My god. I love that Gina G song
Rex Holes (6 months ago)
I had my own original music flagged, all the tracks are recorded by me mixed by me and mastered by me, took a month to sort it out, it is fucking absurd you can't show 30 seconds of a Nintendo game and even worse you can't be sure your own intellectual property won't be demonetized or taken down.

Interesting that Jim has a video on this, as angry joe Vargas actually encountered it three years before, in a video he made in December of 2013. In that video, a rant covering YouTube’s flagrantly inadequate copyright policy, Joe unwittingly used this very technique by causing two companies to claim a video at the same time. Feel free to fight over who actually invented it Jim.😂

This still works?

Even today this is still a relevant video which is impressive at how innovative Jim is, but also sad that he and many others do so much but unless they become billion dollar advertisers they will never be more than flies to the YT executives.

couldn't you make your intro copyrighted by a shelve company, at the moment someone copyrightclaims you you get a lock.

**Yeah, imagine this scenario... ** YouTube: We're sorry, but your Content ID claimed video by someone else can't be monetized because it's not advertiser-friendly. Greedy Copyright Owner: Fine, I'll just manually review the claim. YouTube: Sorry, this review is denied because (original uploader) does not own the necessary rights to have this monetized. Greedy Copyright Owner: OF COURSE HE DOESN'T OWN THE RIGHTS, YOU IDIOT!! WHY DO YOU THINK I CLAIMED THE STUPID VIDEO!?!? two weeks later... The New York Times: Greedy Copyright Owner $ues YouTube over Adpocolyp$e preventing him from claiming a fair u$e-allowed video through Content ID Jim Sterling: Oh, the corporate media... Karma struck back at you like a b****! That's what you f***in' get for starting the f***ing adpocolypse!
Ofree (10 months ago)
why not get drill queen or jim's big ego to content id you? or does content id work so that they would have to content id other people's videos too. because then you wouldn't need to use a potentially awkward song/clip. especially because unlike other times, there is no one talking over it.
TheNN (11 months ago)
Y'know there's another layer to this I don't think anyone, not even Jim realized (unless they did, in which case I'm just repeating what others have said) What if he failed? As in, what if he did all this and only ONE copyright strike was put on a video, and so that company started making money on it. At that point, I think that there's a real thing going on: ACTUAL copyright infringement. Say the two companies were...Nintendo and Microsoft, to keep it simple. Say that Nintendo makes the monetization claim. WELL, under Youtube's system, fine, they are now making all the money from the video. BUT, under that SAME logic, if Microsoft had made the claim, wouldn't they also be deserving of ALL the money the video makes since said video is including things that (supposedly) infringes on Microsoft's copyright? I guess then at that point, using the logic the system runs under, now NINTENDO is infringing on Microsoft's copyright, which is in fact, completely and absolutely, without a single fraction of a doubt: Illegal. Therefore, Microsoft would be completely, from a legal/law standpoint, in the right, to sue Nintendo for damages. OR even sue Youtube for damages because of the system, or hell, BOTH. I bet either way that'd get big corporations noticing shit, Google especially if suddenly there's a giant shitstorm because of THEIR system. Or not, who knows. But it'd be interesting to see it play out if it happened.

The Copyright Deadlock concept is breaching my copyright. I will have to do a content ID claim on this video. :)

I can't help but get flashbacks to Hellblazer: Dangerous Habits. You've sold your soul to all the lords of hell, and they can't all have it, so they can't touch you.
Lazorinc (1 year ago)
tl;dr do some research into what companies take monetization right away from your vids but don't make money themselves, and put about 30 seconds of footage in a video where you're using other copyrighted shit.

"...me dancing to Chains of Love, a one-off gag that will never happen again." Jim, you are a spectacular liar, and I thank God that you are, because I love watching that dance every time you talk about Nintendo. XD
SsnakeBite (1 year ago)
Content ID: because playing a few seconds of copyrighted material is theft, but claiming ownership on a video that is 99% somebody else's work and intellectual property (and in many cases, 100%) and taking their ad revenue isn't.
General CJG (1 year ago)
SsnakeBite Sadly this shit still happens, and it doesn't seem that it will ever stop. Thank god for Jim and the Copyright Deadlock.
