The original TBT´s series was not just funny but most of all unforgiving. I believe it was in the 3rd part that one dungeon field would completely throw you not only out of the dungeon but also delete your savegame, so you had to start all over again...Talk about tough playthroughs...;-)

I was hoping this would be good and I think I will get my wish

Volatile female = Aoife mode? I jest. Please have mercy

what's with the combat screen? It looks like a magical version of that game where you smash the gophers when they pop out of their holes. Why are your characters partially sunk into some black abyss?

Cabbage, carrots, and potatoes

First person Fable? Looks cool!

Drinking while in combat. Does the bear song play when partaking? Oh please say it does.

I don't remember the original Bard's Take bring that sparkly ;) "Trow Squeezings"?? Given that trows are the trolls/svartalfars of Orkney, where the real Skara Brae is, I don't want to drink their Squeezings But would happily watch Mr Chiodini make it in his kitchen...

You decided to play as bard Aoife

Never played this series before would you suggest starting with this one or an earlier game?
David Rogers (3 months ago)
dmugirl2008 this game is probably the best starting point in the series. Bards tale 3 was released in the early 90's.

Please tell me that the combat system visuals aren't final. I'm not usually too bothered about graphics (I enjoyed Papers, Please, for example) but the inconsistency of static 2d friendly characters fighting animated 3d enemies just looks horrific and is putting me right off. Pull the camera back and show friendies in 3d as well. Or make everything 2d.

I miss Chiodinis kitchen. Just saying. 👍👍

Luke from outsidextra should do a dob play through...
shivamib (3 months ago)
they really should nerf dob, those backflip finishers are just silly

Replying to get this comment pushed up!

David Stepanek totally agree really hope they notice this!

Oh, I remember playing the original on the 48k Spectrum, tape loading and saving was painful.

Looks nicely original and funny for once. Nice to see something new being tried.

feels my original bard's tale game staring at me from the playstation (alright, so it's more giving me a drunken side eye)
Letsbothbuysuspenders (3 months ago)
Singing and drinking? They made Johnny the game!

This wasn't on my radar at all. Looks quite tempting. Another rpg for the pile of shame
phimseto (3 months ago)
LOL..."the pile of shame." I know it well.

I remember playing the Bard's Tail on the PS2 so I really wish they'd bring that back as well

Drinking in the middle of combat isn't unique to this game--there was the Drunken Master fighting style from Jade Empire, too! :)

First time hearing about this, definitely interested. Having the character make a comment before battle is a nice touch, feels like it gives more aspects to your characters personality.

"unlike previous instalments The Bard's Tale IV is a first person game, lacking a narrator" Uh. Did you even play the original Bard's Tale games? They were always first person, they were dungeon-crawl blobbers, shown in first person view. There was no narrator. You're getting confused with the 2004 comedy aRPG reboot/spin-off/whatever with Cary Elwes and Tony Jay, which was a top-down comedic RPG with Tony Jay narrating the game. *edited since I always get Tony Jay and Richard Wilson mixed up.. they sound near identical :D

Bards Tale, Wizardry, Alternate Reality: The Dungeon and all the SSI gold box games are what got me hooked on computers many moons ago.    Much different than the reboot.

And yet Johnny does remark upon the legacy of turned-based combat at 6:45, which was the bread and butter of the original Interplay games but was replaced with action in the inXile reboot. I grew up playing the heck out of the Tales of the Unknown, and I really liked the reboot (the dialogue and voice acting was gold!). I'm chuffed to hear they're rebooting again and I'm looking forward to it.

Makes you think, doesn't it? I mean, don't get me wrong, the preview/thoughts were certainly sound and the game does look like an absolute blast... but.. yeah... "do you even Bard's Tale, bro?" came to mind xD I still remember playing TBT1 on my ancient Amstrad PC1512. 4 colour CGA, thankyouverymuch xD
thebruce (3 months ago)
I was just going to say the same thing. After that comment, I almost feel led to rewatch the overview with the idea in mind that they have no knowledge of the original trilogy. o_O
Sabin1981 (3 months ago)
RIP indeed.. the man was astonishingly talented and had dozens upon dozens of roles.

This has gotten me interested in the Bard's Tale series. From what I've seen it reminds me of the Discworld series, which I'm also starting to get into.

As one of the original backers, I'm happy to learn it has your seal of approval so far. I didn't back high enough to get access to the beta so thanks for this! <3

Like Dandelion from the Witcher gets his own spinoff... Yes please
Manish Ghosh (3 months ago)
So this is most certainly definitely absolutely getting an EG full playthrough. I mean bards, booze and silliness, c'mon!
