Churchill Brothers I League Champions 2013

1 ratings | 568 views
Churchill Brothers on Tuesday won their second I-League football title with a match to spare as they played out a 1-1 draw with Kolkata's Mohun Bagan. With 52 points from 25 games, Churchill ensured that the I-League trophy will stay in Goa for the sixth consecutive season. It again underlined that the power equation in Indian football has decisively shifted to Goa from Kolkata. Churchill, who needed a draw to overcome Pune FC's challenge, got a rude shock when C S Sabeeth of Bagan scored from a solo effort in the 26th minute. But India captain Sunil Chhetri headed a cross past the Bagan keeper to put the sides back on level in the second half. The goal ensured that the supporters who gathered at the Tilak Maidan were able to start celebrations. In the 72nd minute, a cross from the right by Denzil Franco saw Chhetri rise high above the defence to head the goal that sent the crowd into a frenzy. It was a goal that Churchill needed and a goal that got them the point that they had been looking out for.
