resurrection is something Christians have
Travonous (1 year ago)
Can't be more clear than the Resurrection of the Savior of everyone.  Also link can only destroys evil in all of it's forms only if they have harmed the innocent. And Gannon is some form of Vampire master that once dealt with all that he has corrupted is also vanquished. An Anti Christ figure if you will.

So that's why you don't actually travel in time in a Link to the past.

Sorry, but I have to acknowledge something. I am a proud Atheist, but some of these Atheists in chat are being very rude and disrespectful to others. Respect other peoples beliefs whether or not you agree. Why cause more division in our society?
ShougaTouki (1 year ago)
Since the series has its own established ingame religion now with Hylia, my guess is that it will be a lot more limited than previous installments. It's way too early to say for sure, but based on the fact that we now have a central goddess as a character as of Skyward Sword, that's just what I'm going with.
Mr.Blorp&Bloper (1 year ago)
da fuck 5:34
I was expecting more debate from both sides in the comments like what usually happens on these types of videos, but this time it is mostly triggered anti-theists for some odd reason. People get overly offended by simply hearing the word "religion".
Lycorias (1 year ago)
Christianity no longer really works in Zelda due to the prominent aspect of reincarnation across the games. The fact that the reincarnations of the goddess and hero will always do battle with the incarnation of hatred directly opposes the linearity of Abrahamic time. You have one life, and one afterlife, and that's it.
Lycorias (1 year ago)
So Catholicism allows for reincarnation?
Idazmi7 (1 year ago)
+Lycorias The hell do you mean, "which part"? None of what you mentioned contradicts Catholicism, and that's what Link's whole in-game representation was based on.
Lycorias (1 year ago)
Which part?
Idazmi7 (1 year ago)
Especially since this is fiction, that actually doesn't really contradict Christianity. It doesn't contradict Catholicism at all.

I would love to see a cannon explanation for the crosses in the first two Zelda games in Breath of the Wild.
KajiRider1997 (1 year ago)
The fact that the first two games of the series and only ones that show the cross in this franchise are featured in the fallen hero time line and even better in the age of decline when most people stopped believing in the goddesses makes this hilarious to me. Praise the goddesses, and the aesir, who this holiday where originally intended for, before we where forced to convert! O hi Spanish inquisition! .
Idazmi7 (1 year ago)
Actually, that makes it even more interesting: the "fallen hero" timeline has the best ending of all the timelines.
WOT122 (1 year ago)

Religion is best treated like any other mythology, and should be used as inspiration as much as anything else. I'm glad we've made some progress, as shitty as our species is, to the point where we don't get too bitchy about video games using religious memorabillia. Whether or not Breath of the Wild will draw inspiration from religion, it's gonna be an amazing game.
Apostolic Gamer Girl (1 year ago)
Honestly I already got a Catholic vibe from BotW, specifically with the Temple of Time and the goddess statues(Catholics give a lot of reverence to statues if you didn't know that). It came from Ocarina of Time, so it's not that surprising, but really, it should be called the Basilica of Time or Cathedral of Time if you look at it's design. It looks like it would fit decently well with the Romanesque and Gothic period cathedrals. It has that nice, solid frontal facade and the two towers framing it, as well as a nice central point that reaches to the sky, plus there are three relief points/towers, which were common in the design of Cathedrals at the time due to the obvious reason of the trinity. I mean, just look at the Westwork from the Abbey Church of Corvey (which is actually Carolingian, not Romanesque or Gothic) or the Parish church of Clervaux and tell me you don't see any similarities. And then inside, all of those arches! They're pointed arches, a common design in Gothic Cathedrals. Its layout is front to back and though they aren't quite in the right spot, there are two little room areas right next to the door that would create the cross shape, another common thing in Cathedrals. The most important part of the Temple is at the very back where the goddess statue is located. Anything there? Yep. It's rounded. You want to guess where else that's the case? Basilicas. The design is originally Roman and was where a judge sat, but it was adapted into early Christian Basilicas and stuck around for quite some time. Then there are the windows themselves. They aren't stained glass obviously, but they are there, and in Gothic churches especially it became more and more the norm to have as many windows as they could and as little wall as possible. I wish it was in better condition so when the game comes out I could really look at it, but alas, I shall have to satisfy myself with the ruins, which are beautiful in themselves. Sorry for the Text wall!
Manderson (1 year ago)
You could also mention a ton from majors masks. The Stone tower Temple is known to be a representation of the Tower of Babel. when you get to the top "heaven" you can then flip the tower into 180, into "hell". and it is almost as if the statues in the stone tower, which are sculptures of the four giants, are giving you the middle finger in their poses. I personally see this as them saying you are not a god and though the tower can be built close to heaven we can flip it and send you back down to earth, or even to hell.

here is a thought and ties everything what if some how Gannon was able or maybe even hylea was able to connect all three time lines and they all converged in the down fall time line thus making two or more Zelda's also would be y line had to be awoken y there are so many things that are from all the time lines and y there are attest two castles ECT what's ur thoughts
JJ tiffany (1 year ago)
I think the seasons will play a role on religion in the new Zelda game. Different seasons for growing crops may result in statues being worshiped in the game or festivals being carried out. Also the many towns and tribes in the game could have religious/ cultural influence on Links quest like in past games.
djgeiger0620 (1 year ago)
Great video! I didn't know a lot of this info! I think tying different themes/stories from different religions is neat! I would LOVE to see Greek mythology thrown into the mix!

I for one would love to see lots of religious references in the future games in the series. I hope they bring back the Cross shield for BOTW.

i think link will be a priest, and the king of hyrule the pope. i also think gannon will be satan and zelda will be jesus. and the elf dude is buddha
NxlrN (1 year ago)
I don't know a lot about religion but I understand that the Shinto religion is based around different spirits in nature. This could follow the theme and importance placed on the world in BOTW. Also Shinto is a popular religion in japan.
Wow. I never knew any of this. This is actually pretty cool to know.
I would like to see Shinto references. Although, in the future, the Norse religions would be nice to hear about in the Toon Link story line.
Brendon Dellinger (1 year ago)
Thanks for handling this respectfully guys. I love Zelda and I love your videos, keep up the great work! As for how religion might play a part in Breath of the Wild, I think some of the different races in the game will be inspired by mythical creatures and or beings.

I have a new love for the Zelda series after this. So cool that they tied in real-world religions to the games. And of course, America wants none of it because someone might get offended and subsequently triggered. Don't let America stop you Nintendo! Don't pander to us! (Unfortunately I'm also American.)
John Smith (1 year ago)
Also thank you for doing this video. Noticed some pretty triggered people in the comments who haven't even watched the video because the title has "religion" in it 😂
James Gillam (1 year ago)
I'm glad they removed most of the religious nonsense or toned it down, every reference to a direct religion excludes people of other faiths, atheists, agnostics, better to just have fictional religions and origin stories, other excluded the awesome Fire Temple music because it offends people is garbage. It sounded awesome and was not in anyway meant to offend Muslims.

And most if not all of those awful ripoffs are unlicensed games. Hmmm I wonder why? It's weird to see Link in a Santa hat XD. Triforce of the Gods sounds like a much better name than what we have now :(. I really don't give a shit about religion so this religious stuff doesn't bother me. I think Triforce of the Goddesses would be an even better name. 4:29 You forgot the Sheikah. I actually like the Crescent Symbol better than the final design :(. Link was more fortunate with the spider's thread since he's not a criminal.

Merry Christmas!  Nintendo should have stayed with Miyamoto's original vision which was more interesting by far.  The majority of the US population identifies as Christian then and now (70%).  This just strengthens the respect I already had for Miyamoto.  He is a leader in his field and a man rare creative talent.

gddmn (1 year ago)
BotW will have religious elements, but I'm not sure anything will explicitly reference existing religions. The three golden goddesses & the Triforce will almost certainly be important in the game, and Hylia also seems to be important based on the statues we see in the gameplay demos. I hope there will be some references to pagan culture because it would fit really well with the existence of monsters and spirits and fairies and magic and so on. I'd also like to see some Shinto references. They have been present throughout the series, but it would be cool to see a bit more of that. I do wonder if Hylia is at all inspired by Amaterasu?
Eliane R. (1 year ago)
In Wind Waker, there is a huge religious reference : Deluge! The former corrupted world covered by water and a few chosen rebuild the world. The "deluge disaster" is present in Judaïsm, christianism and Islam.

Great video. I wish that NOA wasn't so PC about religious references in their games. These references I think add to the lore, help tie in these stories to the real world and help convey the feeling that games like The Legend of Zelda have a much deeper meaning than just controllable animations on a TV screen. I would also point out that when Christ crossed into Gadarenes, he cast demons out of the possessed and put them into pigs. Gannon is a pig like demon.
M Adel (1 year ago)
I am a muslim and I would like to clarify few points mentioned in the video that are not accurate: 1. Music is not "haram" or forbidden in Islam. Only some strict schools of thought consider it forbidden and even then, music produced by natural sounds is not an issue. 2. The crescent and the star are not symbols of the religion of Islam. It was considered a non-official symbol to denote places that have Islamic nature such as mosques in maps and road signs and such. There is no reference in Islam for this symbol whatsoever. 3. What was referred to as an Islamic "chanting" in the original fire temple theme is actually the Islamic call of prayer that was originally been used since the times of prophet Muhammad and up to this day. This is what might have caused the controversy after all. But as far as I know (I have witnessed the game original release back in 1998 in Saudi Arabia), There was no uproar or a controversy or anything and people were enjoying the game with no problem whatsoever. It might have been a decision from Nintendo not influenced by any controversy after all. 4. Last point, which is not directly related to the subject. Islam is pronounced "ˈɪslɑːm" not "ˈɪzlɑːm" which is a very very common mistake. Even among non-Arabic speaking Muslims. Great video btw. Happy Holidays to you all.

I hate the fact that you are allowed to PRAY to the false goddess Hylia statues in Breath of the Wild. What is Nintendo thinking? Such blasphemy...
Ryan Clay (1 year ago)
I don't think that there will be any religion in Breath of the Wild because people these days get offended by literally everything and Nintendo has to walk on egg shells to try to not offend anyone.
Zeldalegend _ (1 year ago)
Although I think religion will be referenced in BotW, it won't be a focal point like in the other games. I think that the main focal point in this game will be technology rather than religion
Cae Herlin (1 year ago)
I've come across reference to the Zelda series, particularly starting with A Link to the Past, being heavily, if more subtly or loosely, inspired by Shinto. Having "the gods" in the title doesn't, after all, sound particularly Christian, especially given that the Japanese 神々 (kamigami) is explicitly plural where 神 (kami) would have an ambiguous number. The three pieces of the Triforce can be said to be derived from the imperial regalia of Japan, which are based around benevolence, courage, and wisdom. These three items have significant meaning in Shinto as they are said to have been used in certain ways by major kami. The depiction of nature in general throughout the series can also be more loosely tied to Shinto ideals. I just think it's a rather interesting angle you guys probably haven't heard of, but the incorporation of Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism is fascinating as well.
Ninjaananas (1 year ago)
Cae Herlin I heard that Majoras Mask has a lot of elements from the Shinto Religion.
intothekey (1 year ago)
I think we have already had some religious themes in breath of the wild. The wooden horse statue could be a nod to paganism/druidism. I've always loved the rebellious themes in the Zelda games. I hope they don't shy away from it just to be pc.
Prophetic Rain-Maker (1 year ago)
Commonwealth! You're blowing up! Massive sub gain recently, it's nice to see! Love the video once again!
The Seven Sages remind me of the Saptarishis (Seven Sages) of Hindu legends. They are mind-born sons of Brahma, the Consciousness of Creation which symbolizes the process of Becoming.

You missed the heavy Pegan principles in OoT and TP. Such as the forest temple in OoT, worshiping creation. That's Pegan.

Nintendo should probably keep real world religions out of its games because 1 controversy, and 2 it is a fictional game and thus should have fictional religions.

SuperSaiyanPikmin (1 year ago)
I have a question, wouldn't the flood in Wind Waker be representative of The Great Flood with Noah in the Bible? By the way, Happy Holidays and have a great New Year!
SuperSaiyanPikmin (1 year ago)
+Lycorias I don't mean to go on a religious tangent, but in my opinion, because God flooded the Earth because of wickedness for the sake of a better future, it was a good thing in the end. With that said after you mentioning it and me thinking about it more, you're right, I now doubt the flood in Wind Waker was a direct connection.
Lycorias (1 year ago)
Besides what +The Hindu added, the Wind Waker flood may be like the Great Flood, but the Biblical one was caused by the overwhelming wickedness of men whereas the WW one was caused by helpless humans praying for salvation from actual demons. The result (global flooding) was the same, but the cause is basically exactly opposite.
Gamer Of Hyrule (1 year ago)
SuperSaiyanPikmin No, the great flood is in so many tales, in Shintoism
SuperSaiyanPikmin (1 year ago)
+intothekey You know, I never realized the Seven Sages being a connection until you pointed it out, and that's pretty cool. I think Breath of the Wild will just have your standard Hylian Religion with references to real-world Religions here and there.
intothekey (1 year ago)
Probably. Also there is seven sages, seven being a Christian holy number. I personally think that Breath of the wild will have pagan references considering it's focus on nature and that wooden horse thingy.

Nick Schneider (1 year ago)
I liked this video. I think it is a shame that so much of the media tries to white wash religion. I feel that those in the media are usually much more sensitive than those they claim to "protect". I have a lot of deeply held religious beliefs, but I don't ever mind seeing religious references in art and media, even if they do not conform with my own beliefs. So long as it is not offensive to the ones BEING referenced (as in the Islamic prayer in OOT), and does not present one religion as being "right" and the other "wrong" (not like that would be criminal, but probably just not smart), then there is absolutely nothing wrong with utilizing the theology and virtues of religion within a video game. Especially a video game series like Zelda. I will add this one thing. The creators have done a shockingly good job of understanding what a Temple actually is. Most people, especially of our generation, have no real understanding of what a Temple is, as opposed to a church or other house of warship. The Legend of Zelda gamifies that theology with impressive accuracy.
Nick Schneider (1 year ago)
I have a feeling I'm opening a can of worms here, but I'm not sure what you mean. I stated that, in general, media creators filter out references to religion in most mainstream arenas (heck, even in Christmas now...). In this very video, they mentioned that this is, in fact, a strict policy within Nintendo of America, showing that our media is less tolerant of references to religion. Even so, this would not really bother me, except religion is actually mentioned a LOT in media. However, the only times it is mentioned is in a negative light. Just think of every notably religious character in every TV show of which you know. Almost without exception, they and their views are represented negatively. There are plenty of bad things about religious people and even potentially within religion itself. However, the media never shows the positive side (of which there certainly is). The fact that it is either not mentioned or mentioned in only one light shows there to be a problem with our media. So, specifically in reference to white washing, how is my "argument" not an argument?
Rixton (1 year ago)
lets be clear: If you use white washing in your argument, its not an argument.

I think The Legend of Zelda is the ultimate crossover for religious mythology, although greek mythology is more subtle in the series. Maybe in Breathe of the Wild, We'll see more things based on Greek and Roman Mythology. Maybe the sheika represent something like Wicca, Satanism, or even the Free Masons.
Sarah Connor (1 year ago)
@ 5:22 you are very wrong here. I am a native arabic speaker and Quran scholar. I'm sad to say this, and sorry to inform everyone, but the shant is NOT arabic and it is NOT a verse from the Quran. It only slightly, very slightly resembles " Ya la il le allah" which means there is no god but god. This is actually a jewish prayer that is also used by muslims, although the jewish version would have the prefix "hear, israel" and the islamic version is almost always followed by: "ya mahmad a- rasur al-allah" (and mohammed is the messenger of god). And clearly the second part of the shaunting doesn't even come close to what the zelda fire temple shanting had. I can confirm with 100% clarity that these phrases are NOT what is sung in Zelda. Like I said, some members in our community are just overly sensitive and will complain even if it has nothing to do with Islam. Also, music is not forbidden in Islam. The seducing of (married) women by for example using musical instruments or even your voice, is forbidden however. It's very sad that alot of these imams that issues fatwas do not comprehend their own texts and very little people bother actually reading them! I wish Zeltik and Commonwealth realm haddone their homework just a little bit better on this part, as I know this is a persistent falsehood that circles around the internet that there was an islamic phrase in ocarina of time. There wasn't, but it's true that it was removed due to complaints by the muslim community due to the only slight resemblence and/or mishearing - thus unjustly so!
Ninjaananas (1 year ago)
Sarah Connor To be honest. To know that needs a bit too much research for one video. But I am so glad to see someone who knows better about Islam. Many islamic scolars say things wich are not really true.
