A Lesson In Five Nights (The Jimquisition)

Adversity and a hell of a lot of criticism got Five Nights creator Cawthon where he is today, and on the second annual Jimdependence Day, we examine how.

You are an exemplary critic. You actually do the same as you said of Scott. You actually care about what you're doing. Not criticizing for the sake of criticism. but valid concerns. As this video shows praising someone who heeded criticism rather than simply just finding something to criticize the new work.
Hazukichan X (1 month ago)
Wait, so does this mean he cares about things other than clicks? =O B-but then that must mean all those dim, generalizing random internet goofballs were wrong! A person can sometimes have opinions that someone else doesn't like, without being totally rubbish and biased and wrong and greedy for clicks! Whoever would have thought it?^^
TheUndeadslayer221 (7 months ago)
Well said. I don't think I need to say it, but I'll say it anyway (and many others have); I'm proud of Scott for taking criticism like a true competitor. Taking criticism and using to improve yourself is something that I can't say I've seen many do.

Creshosk Thank god for Jim Fucking Sterling.
+Promethius Tech Many Thanks for having shared your particular father way of handling difficult situation and his name. I checked his work and he must have been really an interesting person, a kind one and a great creative mind. I liked the eccentric shapes, his way of putting colors into them and the chaotic poetry behind the creation of his paintings. Sorry for your loss.

Ben - Definitive Dubs I'm not sure Scott took it as an attack on his character so much as his method. It's no secret that people were up in arms about the startling rate at which the FNaF games were produced, with the first four all being released in the span of one year. Even so, regardless of what you thought of them, they all seemed to be fairly solidly made, especially for the swiftness with which they were developed. Then FNaF World came along, and this time, the criticism hit hard. The speediness of the first three FNaF sequels' release was a sign of efficiency, but with this one, it was a sign of rushing, and boy did it show. Scott even admitted that he rushed it in the process of undergoing his "repentance" for it. Were his drastic measures the right thing to do? I lean toward "probably not." But it's clear he did take the backlash to heart when he set to work on Sister Location. Even without all the differences between the first four games- several voice-acted characters, new mechanics every night[though given that they're each only used once or twice, that may not be a good thing to everyone], semi-mobility to a degree not seen in 4- he did something he hadn't done for the first four: he released the game on the actually given release date. Rather than put it out there prematurely when it was "done", he took the time to make sure it was reasonably polished. That's not to say the game is without its flaws, but I think it's a good sign that we can expect even bigger and better things from Mr. Cawthon down the road.

You got it also admit that for a game that was so minimalistic, but was able to deliver such a surprising dark and demented story, had never really been done before. That’s something I think Scott might have spread a little bit thin over the course of the games, but I believe he definitely started and ended with a bang, and for that I respect him.

i love that theme song. , n the sax is killing it....or pounding it as you would put it 😆👍❤🎮🏆💰 🍌🍌🍌🍌👻🐵👏
Vultra (3 days ago)
This statement is even more prominent now. Scott has managed to make just under half of the games in the series entirely free. The quality has went up even more, and he's connected with fans more than most developers.
Legacy of Flan, Legacy of Flan 2, Legacy of Flan 3, Flanville, Flanville 2, Legacy of Flan 4: Flan Rising... I don’t know who or what this Flan is, but he sure had an obsession with it/him/her.

I am all for how well Scott learned from his audience. Super hate how it has repeatedly been marketed by certain gamers to children who are 7 and not mentally mature enough for the content (as opposed to 7 year olds who are and I am sure they exist).

Becca Makin from....fnaf?....???? Are we referring to the same thing? He wasn't even playing the game from what your saying.... that's defeats the design that makes it scary...

To be fair, fnaf world looks like it would fit in perfectly in the arcade at Chucky cheese. Which is fitting considering the game inspiration. This game probably would of been a Success if he went that route instead.

Never cared for FNAF, always thought of the games as garbage... but goddamn, the guy behind them sounds like the kind of dude I'd share a drink with. Cheers for him, I hope he remains successful.

TL;DW This is the NORMAL cycle. Game is made, Game Critic calls it shit and why it is shit, Game Creator makes better game based on said Critic(s) feedback. It's become so rare these days with most creators just going on selfworshipping ego tip with false copyrightclaims and lawsuits that some people think Jim would be pissed about the success of FnaF. This is actually the goal of his work, he isn't making fun of these games for shit and giggles. He has to make a 15min video about this because it is so fucking rare. Sad sad world. I would be honored if this guy would call my work what it is, but iam not a game creator, so there is that

FINALLY a music mix where they mixed the sax well! Usually they overdo it and have it breaking your ears. This song had a warm/buttery sound. Maybe a little muddy on the bass, but that's ok ;)

It’s actually very refreshing to see someone criticizing game for something more than just the “similar game mechanics”. It sounds like a first-year designer student who thinks that he knows how to make games who keeps telling that same argument. I’m actually very forgiving of the series because of the story, but I’m more than willing to admit it shortcomings, and I’m glad you put those out so eloquently.

Jim, I think the word " sold out" is thrown around too casually. After all, we dont usually know the original intentions of an artist when they create a new game, book, album, etc. I am very willing to give people the benefit of the doubt. That being said, I thank you for not "selling out." Like videogamedunkey, we know who you are and what to expect from your videos/opinions. As a viewer, that is incredibly refreshing. your opinion is honest and reasonable, and you readily admit that your views are an opinion. which only makes me respect them more. This speaks volumes of your character. Videogamedunkey is still my favorite (sorry, he is funnier than you), but i respect your opinion as much. God bless you, Jim Sterling, and good day.

Another good example of a dev with a heart of gold is Yandere Dev, he's been working for 3 years on his game, and not once did he ever release a crappy unfinished version of the game he's creating for a corporate cash grab. He's taking the time he needs to get it done and is constantly making promises and keeping to them to improve his game.

Scott is an artist. I know many people will disagree, but video games are an art form. There is story, character design, sound design, a lot of design and artistry that goes into games. People (like a certain company, you know who) who churn out games left and right with no concern for how they look and how they are received and no care about their own personal feelings towards the games are businessmen/ppl. Scott is an artist. He is devoted to his craft. He CARES about his games and the story within them, and he cares about his consumers. Which also makes him a good provider of services.

I didn't realize this was a pro Freddy video.... fuck that dude, the only reason that game exists is to sell toys
Spencer Fleming (5 months ago)
The series didn't even have merch until late 2016, and the first game was released in 2014. Are you braindead?
KookieKooker (6 months ago)
>the only reason that game exists is to sell toys but... it isn't. Scott didn't even know it'd get anywhere near popular, how the fuck would it be to sell toys, he didn't even start getting merch sold of it until after 3.

z lariviere20 (10 months ago)
criticism is a wonderful thing if you can handle it but it sucks when you think you can handle it and want it but have trouble gathering an audience to criticize your work and cant think of a way to do it without being a pain in the ass or maybe im just overthinking it , idk.

Dude I gotta say that's some stand up shit you just did! My kids love FN@F and I absolutely loath it but knowing what you just told me I will not hate on this game... in front of the kids. And I suppose I can let them indulge themselves so as to help support devs like Scott. Thanks for being a straight up dude and honestly I enjoy the hell out of watching all your vids just for that very reason. Thank you Jim for what you do. Thank God for you!

LowResGamr (10 months ago)
people like scott should be the rule not the exception. All indie devs should embrace criticism and use it as a means to improve. When game critics give a critique of a game it's a way of saying what people could do to improve their products. If critique didn't exist, games would get worse.
Katana Collector (10 months ago)
While i'm not really fond of the fnaf franchise (in my opinion, 2 is the only one that is salvegable) i hugely respect Scott. He took his shortcomings and made a strength out of it, very similiar to silent hill, as in the games shortcomings making it scarier.
