Pay Day (The Jimquisition)

16712 ratings | 505364 views
http://www.patreon.com/jimquisition http://www.thejimquisition.com http://sharkrobot.com/collections/jimquisition-merch Overkill has embodied its name when it comes to downloadable content for Payday 2, but its latest shenanigan is possibly the worst. After adding a microtransaction system to the game in an event that promised FREE updates, Payday 2 has become not just a source of community rage, but an exercise in corporate hypocrisy. This is a game I personally championed. I take its recent heel turn personally as well.

neverwinter nights does this shit now too, and it's entire game is now pay to win, because if you don't you face an incredibly annoying grind and a wall at about level 50. It's especially annoying if you have over 1000+ of these chests that require keys, that you HAVE TO BUY to open the chests, and you cant just....get rid of them normally, either tuck up bank space or inventory space with them. You can't sell them feasibly because they are flooding the economy still month/ years after the fact and so your fucking stuck with them. AND THEY KEEP CRANKING THEM OUT despite the fact that they are nothing but space hogs....
??? ??? (3 months ago)
Why are you complaining about a paid advantage system in payday 2, the game is purely co-op and if a player had an advantage it would only help the rest of the squad, right? Don't get me wrong it's still a douchey thing to do, but it has it's upsides.

Honestly I'd be fine if they had either the loot boxes or the countless DLCs, but the sometimes I get tired by the bombardment of messages that I should buy some additional content...

People call me a pessimist. That I am too negative. I tell them that I'm not doing it to be a dick. I wasn't born a pessimist. I was made into one by life and what I see around me. To quote Elim Garrak: "On the contrary, I always hope for the best. Experience, however, has taught me to expect the worst."

With the recent changes, making all future safes free and updating the console versions and making ultimate edition, what do you think now? Has your view changed?

I like to imagine an intern or whoever being told to say no microtransactions then someone trips and falls on the "add microtransactions" button
Kira Slith (11 months ago)
2 years later, the game seems to have turned around again, Overkill Studios can be a little dickish with sales, but still far better than any modern "Triple-A" game company these days (possibly due to being partially owned by the John Wick guys now?). The skins themselves do fuck and all that can't be done without a few hours in game, outside of that are the rare "statboost" skins, most of which are actually a disadvantage to use and the extremely rare, extra fancy "skins" that are almost entirely new weapons. Since then, every safe has been free, even the latest Crimefest safe.

PS3 version of this game is bugged, the aiming acceleration is bugged at certain sensitivity settings and the game became unplayable for me. I am not surprised the new current gen versions are fucked as well.

I'm not defending microtransactions, as I think they are a big problem in payday, and I don't play it anymore, but from what I remember, the lootbox skins just had attachements already on them, not exclusive attachments. Most players in the game have disposable ingame income for weapons and attachments, so while the safes can be seen as an unfair advantage, they are not a very good way to get said advantage, with buying the attachments you want being more effective. I may remember wrong, as I didn't play the game that much, but that is how I think it was.

This is WAY late but I'm not seeing many comments front and center about what's happened as of recent. After the FLUNK that was the Micro-transaction Crimefest, OVERKILL finally managed to properly take hold of the PAYDAY property from its parent company, STARBREEZE. Immediately afterwards all production of microtransaction-safes were halted, and all safes since have been 100% free to open and collect, being pure cosmetics with a high rarity of a minor stat boost dependant on the skin. The first safes to roll out during the Crimefest however, remained on the pay-to-drill system so as to not crash the game's steam market and piss a whole lot of paying customers off. And yes, while it is still to this day true that OVERKILL has a DLC problem, it seems to have finally come to an end, atleast for the time being. PAYDAY 2 recently had an event where the game was COMPLETELY FREE for 5 milllion players to take on Steam! 5 MILLION people got to take home a copy of Payday 2 all to themselves at no charge, and all DLC released went on a massive sale aswell. Now, Payday 2 comes with a potential bundle of The Ultimate Pack, including every single piece of DLC (not including those requiring other games to be in your steam library to function), aswell as the base game of course for a lowered price. On top of all that, we have been given a definitive promise that any and all future updates and content for PAYDAY 2 will be absolutely free. Which quite frankly leads me to believe that OVK is pursuing other projects for the time being while plotting out PAYDAY 3. I see this as OVERKILL's *successful* attempt to get themselves back into good graces with their community, and I will continue to get PAY-d for the foreseeable future because of it.

1 year later and Payday 2 is still suffering from this one mistake. No matter how hard they've tried to rectify it they've still lost a huge player base who wont be returning anytime soon.
htomerif (1 year ago)
Official press put out by the company saying there won't be microtransactions should be sufficient for a class-action suit, assuming it can be documented and it wasn't just one of the devs mouthing off. It would be like Chevy saying you get XM free for the life of any new car, then saying "nope, we're gonna start charging you for it." Just takes a law firm doing some prospecting in contract law to get things rolling.

I installed payday 2 as part of the free trial of xbox game pass. I uninstalled it after browsing the menus and seeing the HUGE amount of bullshit they sell. It's a joke and the game itself isn't that good. I couldn't be bothered to keep it even though I pretty much paid nothing for it.
Patterned Pike (1 year ago)
Overkill wasn't to blame here. Starbreeze made them do it. As soon as Overkill bought the full rights from Starbreeze they got rid of it.

This is funny to listen to. Sinds at the Time of This comment overkill had removed drills for those safes from the system.

I thing jim went insane with the mlg virus at the start
ana vale (1 year ago)
jim cmon ignore the micros and play the game, plus jamesblack47 said 3 options they could go and they did the first option and at update 100 the safes dont require buying or the drops of drills, unfortunatly its the new safes from the biker one and ahead. heck they care about the community if they didnt they wouldnt help me fix my crashes and im an avid payday 2 player since summer of 2014 (i know the game came out in 2013) and the game is loved by many because the gameplay is fun. i know the micros were shit but IGNORE THEM JUST MOVE ON BECAUSE I WONT BUY MICROS EVEN THOUGH IM A TRY HARD but im a fuckin tryhard in certain situations like if the hosts PC is shit im not satisfied because that aint fair, anyways i have clocked 1500 hours and i suggest you seeing jamesblack47s videos

At one point I was considering picking the game up on a particularly generous sale, but upon seeing the egregious amount of DLC content I was immediately turned off of the game.
aaron trapp (1 year ago)
I buy all of the dlc with money I get from selling safes and skins. Most of it's under a dollar on sale.
Camp Master Noob (1 year ago)
Tried it for free on PC, not only is the game extremely mediocre (gameplay meh, and by God the framerates were shit) but the selling strategy is beyond awful. Just almost every gun is fucking DLC. The base game has ONE sniper rifle. There must be over a 100$ worth of DLC. What BS... And oh yeah I did get one of these dreaded safes. I'll never play the game again so I'm willing to give it for free to the first person who asks nicely.
Lankey Bastard (1 year ago)
Hey I got a job for you. Go break into a safe. And I'll pay you with a bunch of smaller safes. Hello?
Marlon Lopez Troya (1 year ago)
i wonder what does jim thinks of the game right now that everything has been clarified (this black market bullshit was 505 games' fault and they now don't have the license of payday 2) and right now the community/overkill themselves are redeeming themselves and no one i general wants to renember this ever happened
Phil (1 year ago)
One and a half year later this really hurts to see. The game has been flooded with skins and DLCs. I deinstalled the game with over 240 played hours and an infamy level I don't even remember.

I can totally understand where you're coming from, having over 300 hours in this, hearing of micro transactions kinda hurt. But I was getting DLC fatigue and when I went to console for a bit, having vastly inferior versions with little to no support was another strike against them.

Ironman1o1 (1 year ago)
Microtransactions are (mostly) gone. All new safes can be opened for free, but any dropped pre U100 still needs a drill, though they no longer drop. If you don't have any before U100, you'll never get them.
Jet Edge (2 years ago)
i like how the game of the year edition doesnt even include a lot of the dlc
Celeste (2 years ago)
So for the sake of revisiting the new update pretty much reduces the microtransactions to being practically vestigial since safes that require drills are no longer dropped and all safes dropped now and in the future is opened for free
Bear Grills (2 years ago)
Ok, from watching your videos and just opinions of people i think i got the formula for good dlc: first, release the game itself with all the content you have normally, and wait to make dlc. Then, it depends on the kind of game: if it's single-player focused, add new missions in good quantity, making them interact with the story and explaining more but without locking the ending in it like azura's wrath did, and maybe add some content and skins, but without making them op. I still haven't bought fallout 4 but i heard far harbor dlc is a good example, giving you an enormous new region with new missions, characters and gear (btw not sponsored). If it's multiplayer-focused, add skins that can be used in all the maps, plus some new game modes, maps and guns, but maybe if you buy a dlc with guns make it so that you can use those guns only in matches with other people that have them, to avoid free-to-play vs pay-to-win situations. Also, no preorder exclusives, no gamestop exclusives and try to balance content and price.
Adessia (2 years ago)
Well Overkill had the guts to remove the microtransactions and made them boosters able to be picked up, and made Drills free and safes but they are REALLY rare...Well the Drills are, I got a Dallas Drill the week before. They also apologized so I can forgive them.

Fenrir the Destructive (2 years ago)
The DLC isn't required, it's added on content, not required, and the safes don't need to be opened, plus not all the skins have bonuses and the bonuses are too small to actually do anything.
SanitysEdge (2 years ago)
One thing I'd like to add, even though this is an older video, it's not only that they went back on their promise and that the whole mechanic is a n utter fuckfest, but on top of that the microtransaction is an update linked to the crimefest-event in which several free updates were promised, if a specific amount of dlc-packs linked to the crimefest were bought, kinda like a kickstarter tier mechanic. So thank you Overkill for releasing a "free" update which let's me spend real money so that I can make any use whatsoever out of it's content.

I got sick of the grinding farm fest in PD2 left for a while, thought "hmm, you know I think I'm going to check it out again, I miss bank robbing " finished a match, got a fucking weapon skin crate, thought "oh...." And left payday 2 forever, was going to go for infamy, but the only thing infamous about payday these days is the degree to which they hold their audience in contempt.

Noah Boone (2 years ago)
I really don't personally have a problem with the DLCs in the slightest. In Payday 2's case, the money from DLCs has gone to balancing and fixing the games mechanics, and also adding more to the game than I'd ever have thought of. Honestly, I see current Payday 2 (with all the updates and DLC) as Payday 3 essentially, as vanilla Payday 2 is a COMPLETELY different game. You may honestly prefer the DLC weapons than the vanilla ones, and they might have a slight advantage as a result. But they aren't necessary at all. And you don't need to buy a single heist to play it. As long as the host owns it, you can play whatever content you want. Payday 2's handling with DLCs is actually probably the best in the business, by far, but its introduction of microtransactions and the handling that followed is a completely different story.
